Volleyball Opens Up Weekend With 3-1 Win Over Mississippi College

Three Blazers tallied double-digits in the kill column on Friday night to help the Blazers pick up another GSC victory

VALDOSTA, Ga. - After a sluggish start at A.E. Wood Coliseum in Clinton, Miss., the Blazers recouped quickly to pick up the final three sets in a 3-1 (22-25, 25-14, 25-13, 25-14) victory over Mississippi College in a Friday night Gulf South Conference matchup.

Valdosta State has won three straight GSC matches, and five of their last six conference matchups to improve to 9-3 overall, 5-3 in league play. Meanwhile, the Lady Choctaws are still searching for their first conference win, as the team fell to 0-9 against GSC opponents, 4-12 overall.

The Blazers stormed back to hit over .250 in each of the final three sets thanks to strong offensive nights from three of the team's veteran hitters. Destiny Berry continued her incredible season with 11 kills in 19 attempts for a .368 hitting effort, while Jenna Kirkwood led in the kill column with 16 on the night.

Kelsey Hedman broke through with her best performance of the 2014 season, as she swung 19 times for 12 kills and no errors. The performance landed her a season high hitting percentage of .632 in the match.

Berry, the GSC's leading blocker, continued her blinding pace tonight on defense with seven blocks (one solo) to go along with her solid offensive numbers, and Ashley Lala led the way once again on defense with a team high 16 digs.

Despite a .108 hitting percentage in the first set, Head Coach Mike Swan's squad pulled together to finish with a .218 effort while holding Mississippi College to a meager .008 percentage on the attack.

Conference play continues tomorrow in Livingston, Ala. as the Blazers take on the West Alabama Tigers in the GSC Game of the Week! Stay tuned to www.vstateblazers.com for coverage of the match, which begins tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. EST.
