Volleyball Wins 3-2 at West Alabama

LIVINGSTON, Ala. - The Gulf South Conference Volleyball Match of the Week lived up to its billing, as Valdosta State and West Alabama traded sets throughout the afternoon before the Blazers took the fifth and final set for a 3-2 (25-21, 21-25, 25-21, 16-25, 15-7) win.

The narrow victory boosted the Blazers to 10-3 overall, 7-3 in GSC play, while the Tigers fell to 5-10 overall and 4-6 against league opponents.

The Blazers were outhit .265 to .222 in the match, but survived the scare thanks to strong outings on the attack by Destiny Berry and Lea Jaklen, who both eclipsed the .420 hitting percentage mark on the day.

The pair also swayed the match with three blocks each on defense, while Ashley Lala added two kills, four assists, and a team high 18 digs. In addition, Jessica Codato continued to put up big assist numbers in the contest with 36 helpers.

Briana Sandifer served as one of two big threats for UWA in the contest, as she connected for 13 kills in 19 attempts and just one error (.632). But, no other Tiger.

In addition, Sadie Beam added 19 kills in 45 attack attempts for a .400 hitting effort, but a collective .600 hitting percentage by the Blazers in the final set proved to be too much for the Tigers and allowed VSU to secure the win.

"It's important we find ways to win on the road even if we aren't playing well," said Head Coach Mike Swan. "We did that today with four players getting double digit kills, and the eight serving aces were huge for us too. We are looking forward to playing at home next weekend!"

The second round of the Blazers' Gulf South Conference schedule kicks off next Friday at 6:00 p.m., when the Lady Flames of Lee come to town.
