JACKSON, Tenn. - Kelsey Hedman and
Lea Jaklen teamed up for 20 of the Blazers' 45 kills to help the Valdosta State volleyball team pick up a 3-1 (25-12, 21-25, 25-22, 25-13) Gulf South Conference win over Union on Friday night in Jackson, Tenn. at Fred DeLay Gymnasium.
Valdosta State's winning streak against league opponents improved to eight with the win and pushed the Blazers up to a 16-6 record overall, 11-3 in the GSC. Meanwhile, the Lady Bulldogs fell to 7-19 on the year, 2-12 against league opponents.
With the exception of a slight stumble in the second set, the Blazers dominated the contest with a lead in nearly every statistical category. Hedman, Jaklen, and senior setter
Jessica Codato each swung for high percentages to power the offense in the match, and Hedman put up a fantastic defensive performance with four solo blocks and a block assist to help fuel another stellar defensive outing for the red and black.
Service aces also proved to be a deciding factor in the match, as the Blazers baffled Union's service receive throughout the evening. Codato swung for four of VSU's 10 aces, while
Jenna Kirkwood added four,
Ashley Lala tallied two, and
Natalia Campos tacked on one.
The Blazers wrap up the weekend road trip with a 2:00 p.m. EST matchup against the Lady Bucs of Christian Brothers. VSU defeated CBU 3-1 at home on September 20 and will aim to complete the regular season sweep on Saturday in Memphis.
