VALDOSTA, Ga. – Another outstanding defensive showing by the Valdosta State soccer team led to a shutout of the visiting Union Lady Bulldogs, as the Blazers picked up a 2-0 Gulf South Conference win at the VSU Soccer Complex on Saturday afternoon.
The shutout was the fourth of the season for Valdosta State and improved the team's overall record to 6-5-1, 5-1-1 in conference play. Union, meanwhile, left Valdosta on Saturday still searching for their first league win, as the team fell to 2-9 overall, 0-7 against GSC opponents.
The Blazers scored the deciding goal at the 32:58 mark in the first period when
Malin Hegeler freed herself with the ball directly in front of the net and finished cleanly for her second goal of the season.
Margaret Stauffer added on for VSU in the second half with a corner kick that led to her third goal of the year. Hegeler threatened on Stauffer's offering with a missed header, but the missed attempt distracted Union keeper Emily Waggoner and caused the corner kick to deflect off her hands and into the net. The corner opportunity marked one of six for the Blazers in the match. With the score, Stauffer now leads the Blazers in goals on the year.
Union struggled to find scoring chances throughout the contest. A stingy Blazer defense, which has allowed no more than two goals in a single game this year, held Union to just three shots. Each of the shots were on goal, but
Olivia Mills was there each time to claim a total of three saves in the match.
Valdosta State pressured the Lady Bulldogs continually throughout the contest with 15 shots and six shots on goal. Several additional scoring opportunities were halted by offsides penalties, six of which belonged to VSU.
The Blazers will now turn their attention to another GSC matchup, this time against the Wolves of West Georgia for a rare Tuesday night contest. The match is scheduled to take place at 7:00 p.m. at the VSU Soccer Complex and has been dubbed as
South Georgia United Night. In conjunction with the game, the Blazers will welcome players and teams from SGU, an organization dedicated to increasing interest and awareness for the game of soccer in the southern region of Georgia.
