Valdosta State head women's basketball coach Chandler Merkerson announced the hiring of Hannah Barber as an assistant coach.  She began her duties with the Lady Blazers on June 1.

Barber most recently served as graduate manager for the Indiana University women's basketball program this past season, helping lead the Hoosiers to a 26-6 record overall and a 15-3 record in the Big Ten Conference.  The Hoosiers lost in the Sweet Sixteen to eventual national champion South Carolina, 79-75.

Prior to Indiana, Barber was a five-year letter winner at the University of Alabama where she played in 151 games for the Crimson Tide.  She started all 64 games of her final two seasons and helped lead the program to three postseason berths, including NCAA Tournament appearances in 2021 and 2023.

In her extra-year of eligibility in 2022-23, she helped lead the team to a 20-11 record overall and finished third on the team in scoring at 8.0 points per game and dished out a team-high 84 assists.  She was second in the Southeastern Conference and 25th nationally in assist-to-turnover ratio and scored in double digits ten times, while shooting an SEC-best 47.2 percent from the field.

The Homewood, Ala., native, was the 2023 SEC Scholar Athlete of the Year as she earned degrees from Alabama in exercise science (bachelor's) and marketing (master's).  She was a four-time SEC Honor Roll selection and earned a spot on the Dean's List.
