VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Valdosta State softball team returns home to Steel's Diamond at Blazer Park this weekend for a pivotal Gulf South Conference series against Auburn Montgomery. The series begins on Friday, April 3 at 5 p.m. ET, followed by a Saturday doubleheader starting at 12 p.m. ET.
Valdosta State enters the weekend with a 15-17 overall record, looking to build momentum after closing out its previous conference series with a strong 3-1 victory over Mississippi College.
The Blazers showed resilience in Clinton, Mississippi, bouncing back after dropping both games of Saturday's doubleheader. In the opener, Valdosta State fell 9-8 in a back-and-forth contest despite a powerful offensive showing.
Annalise Buncy,
Krisley Arnold,
Madison VanAllen, and
Charlotte Phillips each delivered home runs, with VanAllen leading the way with three RBIs. The Blazers held an 8-4 lead late, but Mississippi College rallied in the final innings to secure the walk-off win.
Game two proved more difficult for Valdosta State, as Mississippi College used an early offensive surge to take control in a 10-0 run-rule victory. The Blazers were limited to four hits, with
Saylor McNearney accounting for two of them.
Despite the setbacks, Valdosta State responded in Sunday's series finale with a complete performance on both sides of the ball. McNearney set the tone with a leadoff home run, while
Chloe Eichelberger delivered a clutch RBI double during a decisive fifth inning rally. The Blazers' pitching staff combined to hold Mississippi College to just one run, with
Madison VanAllen earning the win in relief and
Alyssa Vallad closing the door to secure the 3-1 victory.
Valdosta State will now face a tough test in the fifth ranked Auburn Montgomery squad, who are one of the top teams in the conference. The Warhawks enter the series with a 28-5 overall record and a 13-5 mark in GSC play, coming off a highly competitive series against nationally ranked West Florida.
Auburn Montgomery showcased its ability to win close games, including a 3-2 walk-off victory in the series opener and a dramatic 6-5 extra-inning win to clinch the series. The Warhawks have been fueled by strong pitching performances from Reese Cauley and Sydni Free, along with timely hitting from players like Chloe Baynes, Rebecca Komers, and Jasmine Sneed.
Offensively, AUM has demonstrated depth and consistency, with multiple players contributing in key moments, while their pitching staff has limited opponents in high-pressure situations.
For Valdosta State, the weekend presents an opportunity to gain ground in the conference standings and defend home field. The Blazers will look to carry over the momentum from Sunday's win and continue to get production from their lineup, which has shown the ability to produce runs in bunches.
First pitch for Friday's opener is set for 5 p.m. ET, with Saturday's doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. ET as the Blazers continue Gulf South Conference play at home.
