PENSACOLA, Fla. – The Valdosta State men's tennis team rallied from a 2-0 deficit to defeat Delta State 5-2 on Monday in Pensacola, Fla. The Blazers improved to 2-3 on the year and 1-1 in Gulf South Conference play.
In doubles, the Statesmen took the early lead with wins at Nos. 2 and 3 as Joaquin Jarochevsky and Juan Alzate won 6-1 over
Jan Thissen and
Julien Doitteau at No. 3. At No. 2, Valentin Greco and Valentino Millimaci won 6-3 over
Emile Delporte and
Wilson Igbinovia for a 1-0 lead. VSU's top duo of
Philipp Bosse and
Pietro Casciola were down 4-5 to Simon Ojeda and Alejandro Bravo Diaz when the point was clinched.
In singles, DSU took a 2-0 lead as Bravo Diaz won 6-3, 6-1 over
Yohann Meunier at No. 5, but the Blazers got on the board with a 7-6, 6-4 win by
Jerome Iaconi at No. 4 over Greco. From there, the Blazers got wis at Nos. 1 and 2 in straight-sets as Bosse won 6-1, 6-4 at the top spot over Ojeda and Igbinovia won 6-4, 6-4 at No. 2 over Marti Cerda Castillo. Both Thissen and Delporte battled back from first set losses for three-set victories at Nos. 3 and 6, respectively.
The Blazers return home to host Columbus State on Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the VSU Tennis Complex and then will head to Georgia College for a 2 p.m. match Friday in Milledgeville, Ga.
