VALDOSTA, Ga. – The No. 50 Valdosta State men's tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision to No. 29 Auburn Montgomery Friday afternoon at the VSU Tennis Complex. The Blazers fell to 4-6 on the year and 2-2 in Gulf South Conference play.
AUM (7-8, 4-1 GSC) won at the top spot with a 6-2 win from Giuseppe Bonaiuti and Jami Savolainen over
Philipp Bosse and
Pietro Casciola, but the Blazers responded at No. 3 as
Yohann Meunier and
Jerome Iaconi won 6-3. Coming down to No. 2 doubles, Guillermo Sanchez and Daniel Margoulis won 7-6 (7-2) over
Emile Delporte and
Wilson Igbinovia to clinch the point.
The Warhawks took a 2-0 lead with a win by retirement at No. 6, but Bosse, ranked No. 43 nationally, won 6-2, 6-4 over Bonaiuti who was ranked 58
th, for a 2-1 deficit. AUM earned a win at No. 5 in straight-sets. Igbinovia won 6-4 in the first set over No. 62 Savolainen, but dropped the last two sets 6-2 and 6-3 to clinch the match. AUM's Harry McDonagh won 6-7 (4-7), 6-2, 6-2 over Delporte at No. 4 and Iaconi won 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 over Sanchez at No. 3 for the 5-2 final.
