CLINTON, Miss. - Valdosta State (11-21, 8-12 Gulf South Conference) dropped both games of a doubleheader to Mississippi College (19-14, 13-7 GSC) Friday afternoon at Frierson Field.
The Blazers jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in game one and eventually found another lead at 7-6 before Mississippi College ran away for a 13-7 win. The Choctaws would carry that momentum into the second game, securing the series with a high-octane 14-1 victory.
Game One - Valdosta State 7, Mississippi College 13
Valdosta State began the day with a strong opening frame, plating three runs in the first inning. The Blazers would add two more in each of the fourth and fifth innings to build a 7-6 lead midway through the contest.
Mississippi College answered with a five-run second inning to stay within striking distance before regaining control in the sixth inning. The Choctaws scored three runs in the sixth and added insurance runs over the final two frames to pull away for the victory.
Junior Charlie Banks recorded his tenth home run of the season as he led the Blazers offensively, going 2-for-4 with a home run, double, and three RBI. Junior Luke Flading added a pair of hits and an RBI, while sophomore Parker Ladd also recorded two hits.
Junior Jason Mack contributed a two-run home run, his first bomb of the season. Senior Marcos Sevillano drove in a run and crossed home plate for another as Valdosta State finished with 11 hits on the afternoon.
Junior Garrett Moody made the start, allowing six runs (four earned) over two innings. The Blazers used multiple arms out of the bullpen, with junior Hunter Ward taking the loss after surrendering four runs in one inning of relief work.
Game Two - Valdosta State 1, Mississippi College 14
Mississippi College continued to find offense in the second game, scoring eight runs in the first inning on its way to a convincing victory.Â
The Choctaws added two more in the second and extended the lead late, while Valdosta State was held to four hits in the contest. Flading and Banks accounted for the two Blazer extra-base hits in the contest with one double each, while the former scored the team's lone run in the final frame.
Seniors Brent Howard and Will Beckham each recorded hits, while the Blazers drew three walks but were unable to generate run support.
Senior Drake LaRoche took the loss after allowing eight runs in the opening inning, and Mississippi College finished with 16 hits in the game.
