VALDOSTA, Ga. – Valdosta State men's golfer William Carestam was named Gulf South Conference Men's Golfer of the Week, the league office announced Thursday.  This is the second weekly honor for Carestam of the 2025-26 season, and the first of the spring for the Blazers.

Carestam, a junior from Gothemburg, Sweden, and a transfer from Charleston (W.Va.), had his best outing of the season earlier this week at the Shark Invitational where he paced the Blazers finishing a season-best tied for sixth with a 4-under 209 score.  He fired rounds of 68,72,69 on the par 71, 6,750-yard Grande Oaks Golf Club Course in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.  Carestam earned GSC Player of the Week honors last fall on Oct. 9, 2025.

As a team, the Blazers picked up some good wins over No. 37 Palm Beach Atlantic, No. 50 Tampa, No. 28 Lynn and No. 44 Eckerd, while also beating Embry-Riddle.   Carestam moved up to 34th in the South Region and 112th nationally following his strong play.

The Blazers continue to position for a berth in the NCAA South/Southeast Regional as the second region rankings will be announced Friday in numerical order.  VSU was one of the teams in the region under consideration in the first region announcement a couple of weeks ago.  Check back with vstateblazers.com late Friday afternoon for the complete rankings.

VSU is scheduled to host the 2026 NCAA South/Southeast Super Regional at Valdosta Country Club, May 7-9.
