MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The No. 35-ranked Valdosta State women's tennis team won its fifth match in a row with a 6-1 road win at Montevallo Tuesday afternoon. With the win, VSU improved to 6-3 overall and 3-0 in Gulf South Conference play.
The Blazers made quick work of the doubles matches as
Charleigh Fay and
Ivana Castillo Hurtado won 6-3 at the No. 2 position, while
Lena Beckx and
Milica Prokic won 6-3 at the top spot to clinch the point.
Kitti Nemeth and
Carmelle Vial were leading 5-3 at the No. 3 spot.
Heading into singles play, Castillo Hurtado, ranked No. 70 in the latest ITA singles rankings, put the Blazers up 2- with a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 3 singles, while Prokic battled back from a 6-0 loss in the first set, winning 7-5, 6-3 at No. 2 for a 3-0 lead. The Falcons used a 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 win from Klara Podskubkova over Beckx at the top spot for a 3-1 score. Fay clinched the match at No. 4 with a 6-1, 6-2 win, while Vial won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5 and
Ena Arnautovic posted a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 6.
The Blazers turn their attention to No. 2-ranked Barry for a 10 a.m. match on Saturday in Miami Shores, Fla.
