VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Valdosta State men's and women's tennis teams head to Montevallo for a Gulf South Conference match Tuesday afternoon at 3 p.m. ET, followed by road matches at No. 1-ranked Barry on Saturday morning at 10 a.m.
The Blazer men's team enters with a 3-4 record overall and a 1-1 mark in Gulf South Conference play. VSU is coming off a 2-1 week where it won 5-2 over Delta State last Monday, while losing 4-0 to Columbus State on Wednesday and then winning 6-1 at Georgia College on Friday.
For the week, the Blazers were led by
Jan Thissen who was 2-0 in singles and 2-1 in doubles.
Jerome Iaconi went 2-0 in singles and 2-0 in doubles with Thissen. This spring,
Philipp Bosse is 4-1 in singles to lead the team as he is 2-0 at the top spot in the lineup and 2-0 at the No. 2 spot. Julian Doitteau is 3-1 in singles as is Iaconi. The Blazers have really struggled this season in doubles as they are a combined 4-13 in doubles this spring.
Bosse sits 58
th nationally in singles as he is 7-3 this season, while Doitteau is 64
th at 5-2 in singles this season.
Montevallo enters with a 4-2 record overall and a 1-1 mark in GSC play. The Falcons won 4-3 over Christian Brothers and lost 7-0 to No. 2 West Florida for their league matches so far, while they have won two-straight with a 4-3 win over Tennessee-Southern and a 6-1 win over Spring Hill College. Leading the way this spring in singles is Simon Luigs who is 3-0, while Linus Sparding is 2-0 at the No. 6 spot. In doubles, Luigs is 4-2 overall as is Guilherme Gracioli.
VSU has won the last eight meetings in the series and won last year in Valdosta, 6-1. The one win by UM last season marked the first time the Falcons had won a team point in the past eight matches.
Barry enters at the No. 1 team in the country and 14-0 overall, while it is 5-0 in Sunshine State Conference play. The Buccaneers have the top-ranked singles player in Yan Kodjoed who is 20-3 in singles this year, while Riccardo Trione is 6-4 and No. 18 nationally. In doubles, Adam Lynch and Thomas Machado are 34
thnationally as the duo is 9-1 in doubles. Lynch is 14-2 in singles and Machado is 13-5.
The Buccaneers lead the all-time series 20-12, but VSU has won three-straight in the series and five of six. VSU last won in Miami Shores, Fla., on Feb. 10, 2024, in a 4-3 victory.
On the women's side, the Blazers went 3-0 last week with wins over Delta State (5-2), No. 26 Columbus State (4-3) and Georgia College (7-0) to improve to 5-3 on the year and 2-0 in GSC play. Blazer
Milica Prokic won 7-6, 6-7, 6-3 at the No. 2 spot over Monika Temkova of Columbus State to clinch the match on Mar. 11, as VSU won against the Cougars for the first time in 11 tries.
This spring,
Charleigh Fay is 6-2 in singles at the No. 4 spot, while Prokic is 5-2 at the No. 2 spot and
Ena Arnautovic is 4-2 at No. 6. In doubles, Fay and
Ivana Castillo Hurtado are 4-0 at the No. 2 position as VSU is 16-5 in doubles this spring, while it is 27-19 in singles.
Montevallo enters with a 4-2 record overall and a 1-1 mark in the GSC. UM posted a pair of 7-0 wins last week over UT Southern and Spring Hill College. The Falcons had a 6-1 win over Christian Brothers and a 6-1 loss to No. 2 West Florida.
For the spring, Sophia Baillos and Anna Nevada Henriksen each are 4-2 in singles, while Ella De Jesus is 3-1 as is Latizia Bojara. The team is 22-12 in singles, while it is 11-7 in doubles led by Claire Jaramba and Klara Podskubkova and De Jesus/Henriksen who both are 4-2.
Montevallo has won five of the last nine in the series, including a 5-2 win in Valdosta last season, snapping a three-match skid. The Blazers are 1-2 in matches at Montevallo and won there 6-1 in 2024.
Barry enters at No. 2 nationally as a team as it is 11-1 overall and 2-0 in SSC play. Only Florida Gulf Coast, Division I, beat Barry so far this season in a 4-1 setback on Feb. 27. Barry has a 7-0 win over Division I Temple this season and will face SCAD-Savannah on Thursday before hosting VSU Saturday.
This season, Dana Heiman is 13-4 and ranked No. 7 in singles, while Ailen Crespo is 36
th nationally and 4-2 in singles. Heimen and Nikolova Anastasia-Aleksandra are sixth nationally in doubles and 6-2, while Louane Lutringer and Crespo are 15
th nationally in doubles and are 9-1 this year.
The Buccaneers have won 21 of the last 25 meetings in the series and 14-straight dating back to a 6-3 win by VSU in Miami on Feb. 18, 2008.
