Lady Blazers Notch Third-Straight Win Saturday Afternoon

VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Valdosta State women's basketball team downed visiting Trevecca Nazarene Saturday afternoon 78-64 at The Complex for its third-straight win.  VSU had four players in double figures led by 14 points and ten rebounds from freshman Rebecca Souverain off the bench.

The Lady Blazers (12-10, 9-7 GSC) shot 52.5 percent for the game on 32 of 61 from the field, while they were 7 of 14 from deep and 7 of 10 from the line.  VSU held a 21-10 advantage in points off turnovers in the game, while holding TNU to just 37.5 percent shooting on 24 of 64 from the field, while the Trojans were 4 of 21 from distance and 12 of 15 from the line.

Souverain finished 7 of 12 from the field, with ten rebounds, 14 points, one block and one steal in 21 minutes of action.  She registered her first double-digit performance and first double-double-double of her Lady Blazer career.  Junior Erin Whalen finished 6 of 11 from the field, 2 of 4 from deep, long with five rebounds and two assists for 14 points.  Freshman Chardae Rumph had 13 points on 5 of 7 from the field and 3 of 5 from deep, while senior Aryana Hicks dished out eight assists with 12 points.

The Trojans (14-8, 11-6 GSC) were led by a game-high 18 points from Jordan Gillies and 10 rebounds, while Cheyenne Trotter also had a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds.  Tatum Shaw and Ava Jones each had 13 points.  No other player had more than four points for the Trojans, while two starters were scoreless.

Behind one of the largest crowds of the season for a doubleheader, the Lady Blazers came out firing on all cylinders, racing out to a 7-0 lead through the first four minutes.  Later in the quarter, Gillies earned the "and one" pulling the Trojans within 15-14.  VS held a 17-16 lead through ten minutes.

TNU tied the game at 21 early in the second quarter on a triple from Shaw, but Souverain scored following a brief drought by both teams as the Lady Blazers finished the half on a 12-5 run for a 33-26 lead at the break.

VSU took a commanding lead early in the third quarter as it pushed the lead to double-digits at 43-33 on a triple from Rumph with 7:15 left in the third.  Later, a steal by Souverian and score from Whalen pushed the lead to 13 at 50-37 with 5:02 remaining in the frame.  VSU led 60-49 through three quarters as it opened the second half shooting 11 of 17 from the field (64.7 percent), while going 4 of 6 from deep and 1 of 1 from the line.  TNU was 9 of 16 from the field for the quarter with one triple and 4 of 5 from the line.

The Lady Blazers stretched the lead to as many as 15 in the fourth as TNU would trim the deficit to ten with four minutes to play, but the Lady Blazers finished the game scoring seven of the final ten points for the 78-64 victory.

VSU returns to the road next week as it travels to the Magnolia State with a 6:30 p.m. ET matchup on Feb. 12 at Delta State in Cleveland, Miss., followed by a 3 p.m. ET Valentine's Day showdown at Mississippi College.
