MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Behind another 30+ point outing from senior
Drew Mills a dominant performance on the glass, the Valdosta State men's basketball team earned a 105-98 Gulf South Conference road victory over Auburn Montgomery Tuesday night at the AUM Athletics Complex.
With the win, Valdosta State improved to 18-9 overall and 13-8 in GSC play, while Auburn Montgomery fell to 5-22 and 3-18 in league action.
Mills was sensational from start to finish, pouring in a game-high 35 points on 13-of-20 shooting, including 8-of-9 from the free throw line, while adding nine rebounds. The senior consistently answered every Warhawks push, scoring in the paint, in transition and at the stripe to help the Blazers withstand a high-scoring battle.
Valdosta State shot 53.4 percent from the floor (39-of-73) and connected on 19-of-27 free throws, while also dominating the glass with a 45-32 rebounding advantage. The Blazers turned 13 offensive rebounds into 19 second-chance points and added 29 fast-break points in an up-tempo contest.
The game featured eight lead changes and five ties, as Auburn Montgomery kept pace behind 28 points and 11 rebounds from Elhadji Thiam and 18 points from Devin Barksdale. The Warhawks shot an even 50 percent (38-of-76) from the field and knocked down 12 three-pointers to stay within striking distance.
After a competitive opening stretch, Valdosta State used a late first-half surge to create separation. The Blazers led 55-45 at the break, fueled by strong interior play and efficient free-throw shooting (13-of-15 in the first half).
VSU continued its momentum early in the second half, stretching the lead to as many as 24 points following a flurry of fast-break dunks and perimeter shots. Senior
Lucas Brown Jr. added 18 points on 5-of-8 shooting and 6-of-7 from the line, while junior
Blaise Wallace recorded a double-double with 17 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.
The Blazer bench also played a key role, contributing 27 points, including 11 from
Samarion Bond and six each from seniors
Maalik Leitch and
Michael Batchelor.
Despite leading comfortably midway through the second half, the Blazers had to weather a late Auburn Montgomery rally. The Warhawks trimmed the deficit to five points in the final two minutes after a Barksdale three-pointer made it 103-98. However, Mills and Wallace were key down the stretch to seal the seven-point victory.
Valdosta State finished with 52 points in the paint and 22 assists on 39 made field goals, showcasing balanced offensive execution.
MJ Jones dished out a team-high 11 assists in 22 minutes, helping orchestrate the Blazers' fast-paced attack.
With the regular season winding down, the Blazers carry momentum into their final game of conference play as they continue to position themselves for the upcoming Gulf South Conference Championship which begins Monday.
VSU completes the regular season Friday at 8:30 p.m. ET at Montevallo in a key GSC matchup with seeding implications for the conference tournament.
