SAINT AUGUSTINE, Fla. – The Valdosta State softball team couldn't quite pull off the 4-0 weekend as No. 20 Saint Leo won the Old Coast Classic Finale 5-1 Saturday afternoon. VSU finished the tournament with a 3-1 record. VSU now stands at 4-6, while SLU is 6-2-1.
The Blazers took the early lead as junior Caitlyn Cooke hit a solo home run with two out in the top of the second for a 1-0 lead. It was Cooke's first home run as a Blazer. SLU used two RBI singles in the bottom of the third for a 2-1 lead and then Abigail Hynes belted an RBI double to left center for a 3-1 Lion lead in the top of the fourth.
In the top of the sixth, Hynes came up big – once again with a two RBI single up the middle with two out for a 5-1 Lion lead and it would be all SLU would need for the victory.
VSU finished with one run on six hits, while SLU had five runs on seven hits as neither team committed an error. Cooke finished 1 for 3 with a run scored, one home run and one RBI, while junior
Jayme Prandine was 2 for 3. Senior
Savannah Barfield (2-1) took the loss in four innings of work, allowing four hits, three earned runs, walked two and fanned three. Junior
Madison VanAllen pitched two innings, while junior
Toree Wofford pitched one.
For the Lions, Hynes was 2 for 3 with three RBI and a double, while pitcher Alex Wright went all seven innings, allowing six hits, one earned run, walked one and fanned five.
The Blazers return home to prepare for the 2026 Gulf South Conference slate beginning next weekend at Trevecca Nazarene for a three-game set.
