CLEVELAND, Miss. – Behind six players in double figures and three players with 20+ points, the Valdosta State men's basketball team posted a 112-103 overtime victory at Delta State Thursday evening for its fourth-straight victory. Blazer senior Dew Mills paced the team with 25 points, while junior
Blaise Wallace added 22 points and 17 rebounds as the Blazers held DSU to no field goals over the final three minutes and change of overtime.
VSU improved to 15-8 overall and 10-7 in Gulf South Conference play, while Delta State fell to 9-14 (6-12 GSC). Mills was 9 of 15 from the field and 7 of 12 from the line narrowly missing a double-double with nine rebounds. Wallace was 8 of 11 from the floor with one 3-pointer and 5 of 8 from the line along with the 17 rebounds, four assists and one block. Senior
Peter McKey finished with 21 points on 8 of 18 from the field, 3 of 8 from deep and 2 of 2 from the line, along with a team-high five assists. Senior
Lucas Brown Jr. added 17 points, while senior
Michael Batchelor chipped in 11 off the bench and senior
Maalik Leitch had ten points.
In a game that featured 22 lead changes and nine ties, the Blazers used a dominant overtime period and balanced offensive production to secure the road win. Valdosta State shot 51.2 percent from the field (42-of-82) for the game and outscored Delta State 18-9 in the extra session. DSU's DaCory Porter put the Statesmen up 99-96 with 3:43 to go in overtime. A triple from Brown tied the game with 2:55 to play as the Blazers outscored DSU 16-4 since Porter's trey for the victory.
DSU also had three players score over 20 points as Elisha Puckett had a game-high 26 points on 10 of 17 from the field, 4 of 8 from downtown and 2 of 2 from the line, while Porter had 20 points and Je'Marion Westbrook added 22 points. DSU finished 33 of 77 from the field (42.9), while it was 16 of 40 from deep and 21 of 25 from the line. VSU held the Statesmen to just 1 of 6 from the field in overtime, while VSU was 5 of 9 from the field and2 of 6 from distance in the extra session.
Valdosta State opened the game aggressively, scoring inside early behind Brown and Mills to take a 4-0 lead. The first half remained tight throughout, with neither team able to build significant separation. The Blazers found success in transition and in the paint, scoring 58 points in the paint overall and 33 fast-break points in the contest.
McKey provided a spark late in the half, knocking down a three-pointer with 46 seconds remaining to give VSU a 43-41 edge at the break. The Blazers shot 48.6 percent in the opening period and controlled the glass early.
The second half saw both teams trade runs in a highly competitive stretch. Delta State caught fire from beyond the arc, finishing 16-of-40 from three-point range for the game. Westbrook and Puckett fueled the Statesmen surge, as Delta briefly built an eight-point advantage midway through the half. Just like on Saturday against Trevecca Nazarene, the Blazers wouldn't go quietly. Puckett splashed a 3-ball with 7:14 to play for an 81-73 DSU lead, but the Blazers quickly erased the deficit with a 9-1 run for an 82-82 score and 5:30 to play.
VSU trailed TNU by ten with just over seven to play on Saturday and won in overtime giving head coach
Mike Helfer his 400th victory at the helm of the Blazers as Saturday's game was eerily similar to tonight's down the stretch.
In the final minute of regulation, Brown drove the lane and converted a layup with 11 seconds remaining to give VSU a 94-93 lead. VSU committed a foul with five seconds to play as Porter made one of two free throws sending the game to overtime.
The Blazers look to avenge an early season loss to Mississippi College with a Saturday matchup in Clinton, Miss., at 5 p.m. ET completing the road trip.
