Lady Blazers to Host UWF at the Complex Saturday

1/30/2026 1:24:00 PM

VALDOSTA, Ga. - The Valdosta State women's basketball team (9-10, 6-7 Gulf South Conference) is set to play host to West Florida (13-7, 8-5 GSC) tomorrow at 2 p.m. at the Complex. The Argonauts visited Valdosta back in November as a participant in the South Region Crossover, though UWF and VSU did not meet at that time. The Argos and Lady Blazers both defeated Eckerd and Palm Beach Atlantic during the early season tournament in TitleTown.

The Lady Blazers will look to tap back into their offense at the Complex after a two-game road skid last weekend at UAH and West Alabama, two games in which VSU shot uncharacteristically poorly. The Lady Blazers continue to lean on the scoring (13.7 PPG), rebounding (8.8 RPG), and defense (2.6 SPG) of junior Erin Whalen to lead the team in several categories. Senior Aryana Hicks has led the GSC in assists throughout the season and sits firmly in first still with 5 assists per game. Hicks also averages double-figure scoring with 11.3 PPG.

The third consistent starter for VSU this season has been sophomore Ka'Miah Pryor, who has started 18 games this season for the red and black. The Lady Blazers have seen breakout performances in recent weeks from several newcomers after injuries removed starters sophomore Amaya Broadus and freshman Kendall Dykstra from the equation. Sophomore Raeanne Eccleston, freshman Chardae Rumph, junior Alina Sapilak, and freshman Rebecca Souverain have each posted their most efficient performances of the season since the 2026 turn.

The Argonauts of West Florida enter the Complex on a two-game road skid of their own against the same two opponents (UAH, West Alabama) as VSU. The Argos are led in both scoring and assists by guard Isabel Grimes. Grimes is seventh in the GSC in scoring (14 PPG) and sixth in assists (3.3 APG). The Argos find a large percentage of their scoring through their defense, averaging 14.6 PPG off turnovers with 8.7 steals per game as a group. UWF is led in rebounding by Ameliah Bell, who averages 8.2 RPG. Bell also averages 12.7 PPG at an impressive 58.9 FG%.

Historically, the Lady Blazers hold a 29 win to 24 loss advantage over the Argos in their all-time series. UWF won both of last year's contests between the two sides, but the teams are an even 4-4 in their last eight meetings.
