VALDOSTA, Ga. — The Valdosta State women's basketball team (5-7, 2-4 GSC) earned an 83-57 Gulf South Conference victory over Mississippi College (4-8, 3-4 GSC) Friday night at The Complex. Valdosta State picked up a key home win to open the weekend against conference competition.
The Lady Blazers were led offensively by junior Erin Whalen and sophomore Ka'Miah Pryor, who both finished with 19 points to pace the attack. Whalen recorded a dominant double-double, pulling down 17 rebounds while also adding six assists and four steals. Whalen's 17 boards were the most in any game of her career. Pryor was equally effective offensively, going 7-for-13 from the floor and knocking down five three-pointers in the win.
Sophomore Alina Martin added 12 points and eight rebounds, while sophomore Raeanne Eccleston chipped in eight points and six boards. Senior Aryana Hicks contributed eight points and six assists to help VSU control the tempo and add to her GSC-leading assist tally. Junior Alina Sapilak scored seven points, while freshmen Chardae Rumph, Kaci Demps, and Rebecca Souverain added five, three, and two points respectively in extended minutes from the Blazer reserve group.
Valdosta State jumped out early, opening a double-digit lead in the first quarter behind balanced scoring and sustained defensive pressure. The Lady Blazers maintained momentum throughout, holding Mississippi College to just 57 points on the night while controlling the glass and forcing turnovers. VSU did not trail during tonight's contest at any point.
