NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Valdosta State women's soccer team scored the opening goal in the 33
rd minute at Trevecca Nazarene as the Trojans scored in the 76
th minute for a 1-1 tie Sunday afternoon.
Blazer senior
Katherine Kimmel scored her first goal of the season and fifth of her career at the 32:03 mark in the first half. Kimmel finished with two shots with one on goal in the match against TNU. Freshman
Rhyia Mitchell and junior
Taylor Youmans each had two shots. Junior
Kayleigh Kearns had a team-high three shots.
VSU (1-3-4, 0-2-1 GSC) finished with 16 shots and six on target, while TNU (2-3-3, 0-1-3 GSC) had six shots and two on frame. The Blazers held a 9-3 lead in corner kicks with seven in the opening half, while Blazer senior goalkeeper
Claire Timberlake had one save and the one goal allowed.
The Blazers improved to 1-0-1 all-time against TNU. VSU started out with the early pressure and junior
Kaitlyn Scherer had a good look just six minute in, but TNU netminder Mary Bauchou was there for the save. Timberlake made her one save at the 13:02 mark on a shot from Cristina Escudero, but the Blazers kept the pressure on and were rewarded with the goal from Kimmel following a shot off the post from Kearns 32:03 into the match.
VSU took a 1-0 lead into the break, but TNU's Anny Mitra scored the equalizer at the 75:15 mark for a 1-1 score. Moments later, Kearns had a good shot but hit the top of the bar and later senior
Victoria Bahr fired a shot low, but Bauchou was there for the save to preserve the tie in the 85
th minute. The Blazers had a corner kick late and Mitchell fired a shot that sailed high in the final minute. Bauchou allowed one goal and had five saves for TNU.
The Blazers continue on the road next week as they head to West Alabama for a Friday, Oct. 3, match with the Tigers at 6 p.m. ET, and then travel to Huntsville, Ala., for a 2 p.m. ET start at The University of Alabama in Huntsville.
