MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Valdosta State volleyball team earned a big road victory over Christian Brothers in three sets (26-24, 25-21, 25-21) on Friday evening in Memphis.
Several Blazer errors saw the Lady Bucs take a 3-0 lead early in the set, but VSU would storm back behind a trio of kills from graduate
Macy Brown to cut the lead to 4-3. A CBU service error followed by an ace from senior
Sabrina Oncins tied the set 5-5. The teams would tie again at 6-6 and 7-7 with the Blazer scoring coming behind kills from Oncins and junior
Asia Montagnani. A CBU kill, ace, and VSU error pushed the Lady Bucs ahead 10-7. Senior
Ava Young recorded the next Blazer kill and a pair of CBU errors brought VSU within 11-10. Sophomore
Avery Mullins recorded a kill but a nice service run from the Lady Bucs combined with several Blazers errors for CBU to jump ahead 16-11.
The Blazers got three points in a row back behind an ace from freshman
Madison Kilmer, another kill from Mullins, and a CBU error to make it 16-14. The sides continued trading blows, with several CBU errors leading to a kill from Montagnani to tie the set 19-19. Mullins delivered an ace and after a kill from Kilmer the Blazers led 22-19. Several more errors led to a 25-24 VSU lead, when senior
Katie Callenberger stepped up for a massive block to win the set 26-24.
Kilmer and Young recorded early kills, but CBU again ran out to an early lead, 7-2 this time behind several kills. Sophomore
Eva LaRochelle recorded a kill and a pair of Lady Buc errors brought VSU within 8-6. Mullins sent down back-to-back kills to tie the set at 8-8. LaRochelle responded to two more CBU errors with a service ace to move the Blazers ahead 11-8.
Mullins added another kill, and two more Lady Buc errors extended the lead to 14-9. Freshman
Ava Keuntjes added to the run with a service ace and VSU led 15-9. The teams traded errors and CBU added an ace when a kill from Young made it 17-13 Blazers.The Blazers rode several more CBU errors and an ace from junior
Hailey Holder to a 21-15 advantage. Another kill from Mullins combined with a Lady Buc error to make it 23-16. Montagnani knocked down a massive kill to move the Blazers within set point, 24-16. CBU fought hard to score five consecutive points, but a kill from junior
Eimy Negron Domenech ended the set with a 25-21 Blazer victory.
VSU wasted no time getting to work in the third set. Montagnani recorded a kill to open the set, and Mullins followed her with a service ace. Two CBU errors and another ace from Mullins shot VSU ahead 5-0 out of the gate. Mullins and Young each added kills and VSU led 7-2. A VSU service error and a kill from the Lady Bucs drew them closer, but kills from Kilmer and LaRochelle pushed the Blazer advantage to 9-5. Several errors occurred both ways and a kill from LaRochelle moved the Blazers ahead 11-9. Montagnani pushed the offense with a kill to make it 12-10.
The teams continued trading points with several errors both ways in a tight battle when Holder delivered her second service ace of the match to push VSU ahead 17-14. Callenberger knocked down a kill and LaRochelle added two more for the Blazer offense to make it 20-16. Montagnani added a kill but several kills from the Lady Bucs drew them closer, 22-20. LaRochelle added a sixth kill to her tally and after two more Lady Buc errors, VSU closed out the set and match 25-21.
Sophomore setter
Avery Mullins led the team with seven kills today, the highest total of her collegiate career. Mullins also led the team in assists (16) and service aces (3). She was followed on the kill leaderboard by two players who recorded six in junior
Asia Montagnani and sophomore
Eva LaRochelle, whose six were her most as a Blazer. Freshman
Ava Keuntjes led the team with 16 digs in the libero spot.
Looking Forward
The Blazers continue their weekend road trip to the Volunteer State tomorrow when they take on Union at 2 p.m. ET in Jackson, Tenn. The team will return home to host three matches next week at the Complex led off by Auburn Montgomery on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
