TAMPA, Fla. – Valdosta State volleyball (1-7) fell in three sets to the undefeated No.3 Tampa Spartans (7-0) on Friday evening.
Tampa jumped out to a 7-4 lead in the opening set. Back-to-back kills from senior
Ava Young and a third from senior
Sabrina Oncins tied the match at seven. Junior
Asia Montagnani and freshman
Madison Kilmer added kills before another from Oncins tied the game at ten. A kill from junior
Eimy Negron Domenech drew the teams even again at 13. Sophomore
Eva LaRochelle (2), senior
Katie Callenberger (1), and Kilmer (1) added kills down the stretch of the set, but Tampa would go on to secure a 25-17 first set victory.
Sophomore
Avery Mullins and Callenberger each recorded kills in the second set. Montagnani (2), Graduate
Macy Brown (1), Oncins (1), and Callenberger (1) added kills in the third. Ultimately, Tampa backed up their No. 3 national ranking with a three-set victory. The Spartans have yet to need more than four sets to win any match during their undefeated start.
Callenberger, Montagnani, and Oncins tied to lead the team with three kills each. Freshman
Ava Keuntjes led the team with 9 assists. Oncins' seven digs were a team best. She was followed by Negron Domenech with six.
Looking Forward
The Blazers are back in action tomorrow at the Bob Martinez Athletics Center in Tampa. They will take on the Florida Southern Mocs (5-2) at 7 p.m. ET on Saturday evening. They will then return to the Complex on Tuesday, Sept. 23
rd to kickoff GSC play with No. 19 West Florida at 6 p.m. ET.
