VALDOSTA, Ga. – The back-to-back national champion Valdosta State men's tennis team learned Friday it is well represented in the final rankings of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II final poll.
The Blazers finished No. 1 in the country following the best record in school history as VSU went 26-0 winning the program's fourth national title with a 4-2 win over No. 9 Washburn May 24 at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla. VSU ran its winning streak to 42-straight matches with the perfect season in 2025, while it is a staggering 73-4 over the past three seasons with a national semifinal appearance in 2023 and back-to-back titles in 2024 and 2025. The Blazers became the tenth NCAA Division II school to win back-to-back titles in men's tennis.
Blazer rival West Florida finished second according to the ITA, while Barry was third marking the top three all from the South Region. Flagler finished fourth, followed by Washburn, Lubbock Christian, UT Tyler, Azusa Pacific, Indianapolis and Catawba rounded out the top ten. Of the top ten, seven qualified for the national championship rounds.
Lee finished 19
th, while Mississippi College was 26
th. For the remainder of the South Region, Florida Southern was 17
th, while Embry-Riddle was 23
rd and Rollins was 27
th.
In doubles, Blazer top duo of seniors
Takeshi Taco and
Xaveam Van Wijk finished fourth nationally as the tandem went 21-4 this year, while senior
Edgar Destouet and graduate student
Arthur Bord finished eighth nationally as they were 23-4.
For singles, Taco regained the top spot as he finished 26-1 this year with his only loss being to Vincent Thiel of Saint Leo on Feb. 21. Taco was earned the Arthur Ashe Sportsmanship and Leadership Award this season, while he earned GSC Top Ten honors and named the Herb and Linda Reinhard VSU Male Athlete of the Year. Taco won the ITA Fall National Title.
Senior
Boruch Skierkier finished sixth nationally with a 28-4 record this year and earned first team all-GSC honors as he mainly played at the No. 2 spot. Destouet finished 21
st nationally with a blistering 31-1 record as he went undefeated the entire spring and won his final 29 matches in a row.
