BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Coming off Gulf South Conference titles in football and men's tennis, the Valdosta State athletic department learned Monday that it finished sixth in the 2024-2025 Gulf South Conference All-Sports Trophy standings, while the Blazers won the men's all-sports standings for the first time since 2019.
VSU finished with 40.875 points on the men's side with strong seasons in the aforementioned football and men's tennis, along with men's basketball and baseball. The Blazers sponsor six sports on the men's side of a possible nine. Following the Blazers was West Florida with 38.250 points and Lee was third at 36.375 points. Lee sponsors eight men's programs, while West Florida has seven.
On the women's side, VSU finished seventh with 31.250 points, while West Florida led the way with 49.375 points. Alabama Huntsville was second (44.750) and Lee was third at 43.375. VSU sponsors six of the possible ten sports in the league for women.
Men's and women's basketball count for every school and the top four next highest finishes for each sport by each school are counted; Regular season finish (standings) counts towards 75% of the final overall rank and tournament finish counts at 25%.
Overall, the Blazers finished with 76.000 points for sixth in the standings with 41.875 points for men's sports and 34.125 points for women's. Lee won the overall title with 117.125 points, while West Florida was second with 114.875 points and Mississippi College was third with 98.625 points.
The Overall All-Sports Trophy counts all sports that a school sponsors; Regular season finish (standings) count towards 75% of the final overall rank and tournament finish counts at 25%; Chowan, Erskine, Flagler, Lander, North Greenville and Spring Hill are affiliate members and are included in calculations, but they do not qualify for the All-Sports Trophy.
The Blazers' highest finish overall was third in both 2019 and 2021. Last season the Blazers finished seventh overall with 83.750 points.
