INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Following the thrilling 4-1 win over West Florida in the Gulf South Conference Championship match last Saturday, the No. 1-ranked Valdosta State men's tennis team remained atop the NCAA South Region rankings, released by the national office Wednesday afternoon.
VSU is 20-0 this year as the only undefeated team remaining in NCAA Division II Men's Tennis. West Florida is second again this week in the poll as its only two losses are to VSU this season (23-2). Barry, who won the Sunshine State Conference championship is third, followed by Saint Leo at fourth and Lee at fifth. Florida Southern sits sixth, followed by Mississippi College at seventh and Embry-Riddle at eighth. Spring Hill College is ninth and Tuskegee is tenth.
The Blazers, Barry and Spring Hill already have qualified due to winning their conference championships.
If the NCAA South Regional were beginning today, VSU would most likely be awarded one of the two teams to host a four-team regional with seeds 4/5/8 visiting Titletown, while seeds 3/6/7 would travel to West Florida. The dates of the NCAA Regionals are schedule for May 9-10. The two winners of the two regional "sites" will advance to the NCAA Division II Men's Tennis National Championships scheduled for May 20-24 at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla.
The Blazers, who are the defending national champions, have won three national titles which are tied for seventh all-time in NCAA Division II history. This marks the Blazers' 30thappearance in the NCAA postseason and are 62-26 (.705) all-time with the three national titles (2006, 2011, 2024), three runner-up finishes, one third place finish and two fourth place finishes.
VSU has qualified for the NCAA postseason for the 11th-straight year of a championship being played (no championship in 2020 due to COVID). With the Blazers' 17th Gulf South Conference title won last weekend, the team earned the GSC's automatic berth in the NCAA postseason.
The Blazers will find out who and where they will be playing on Monday, May 5 at 8 p.m. ET on the NCAA Division II Men's Tennis Selection Show streamed live on NCAA.com.
