VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Valdosta State softball team was unable to complete the series sweep of No. 24 Mississippi College with a 10-3 loss to the Choctaws Saturday in the series finale. VSU swept the doubleheader Friday with a 5-3 victory and a 12-7 win, both in come-from-behind fashion snapping MC's 15-game winning streak.
The Blazers fell to 20-13 overall and 15-5 in Gulf South Conference play following Saturday's game, while MC improved to 25-10 and 15-6 in league play. VSU finished the finale with three runs on seven hits, while MC had ten runs on 12 hits and one error.
For VSU, junior
Rachael Lee finished 2 for 3 with a run scored, a home run and two RBI, while senior
Aniston Gano also was 2 for 3 with a run scored and one RBI. Blazer graduate student pitcher
Claire Maulding (16-7) took the loss in six innings, allowing nine hits, seven earned runs, walked one and fanned seven.
MC was led by Madelyn England who was 3 for 4 with two runs scored, a home run and two RBI. Choctaw starter Madison Jenkins (10-2) went six innings, allowing six hits, three earned runs, walked one and fanned seven.
A hit batter to leadoff Blakely Gill and then a two run home run from England gave MC a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Gill hit a solo home run with one out in the top of the third for a 3-0 lead. The home runs continued for the Choctaws as Caylee Comer hit a two run shot to center for a 5-0 lead in the top of the fourth.
On a 2-2 count with two out in the bottom of the fourth, Lee belted a two run shot to left for a 5-2 deficit and Lee's fourth home run of the season getting the Blazers on the board.
MC added two more runs with four hits in the top of the sixth and a pair of RBI singles and a 7-2 score. In the bottom of the sixth, a leadoff double from junior
Charlotte Phillips and an RBI single and two base error put a runner at third with nobody out. A fly out and a play at the plate retired two batters and a 7-3 deficit.
A leadoff double and an RBI single plated the eighth run of the game for the Choctaws in the top of the seventh. MC scored in every inning in the game but the second and fifth. The Choctaws loaded the bases with one out off VSU senior reliever
Madison Lumpp. Ashley Lightcap singled home two runs for a 10-3 score.
VSU began the bottom the seventh with a double to right from junior

Chloe Eichelberger drew a walk for runners at first and second with nobody out. A fielder's choice out at third was the first out off MC reliever Camryn Bailey. The game ended with back-to-back strikeouts by Bailey.
The Blazers continue at home with a midweek doubleheader scheduled for Wednesday, Apr. 2 at 4 p.m. at Steel's Diamond versus Columbus State.
