CLEVELAND, Tenn. – The Valdosta State women's tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision at No. 21 Lee in Gulf South Conference play on Wednesday afternoon. VSU fell to 2-6 overall and 1-3 in GSC play, while Lee improved to 9-0 and 3-0 in league play.
Lee won all three doubles matches for the early lead and all by the same score of 6-4 as the Blazers were in each match to the very end. In singles, reigning Gulf South Conference Player of the Week, sophomore
Natalie Rainke, faced the top-ranked player in women's tennis in Ashleigh Simes and dropped a 6-3, 6-4 decision for a 2-0 Lee lead. Blazer senior
Olivia Pezo cut the deficit in half with a win at No. 3 singles as she defeated Aliyah Dwyer, 6-0, 6-3, for a 2-1 score.
At No. 2 singles, freshman
Alyssa Novoa won the first set in a tiebreaker over Maria Penalver, 7-6 (9-7), but dropped the next two sets 6-3, 6-4. Senior
Kayla Greco dropped the first set at No. 5 singles in a 7-6 tiebreaker (7-3) and the second set 6-3, while senior
Valentina Jimenez won the first set at No. 6 singles 6-0 over Nicolette Fuhr, but lost in a tiebreaker in the second 7-6 (8-6) and lost 11-9 in the 10-point tiebreaker as the match already was clinched.
