VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Valdosta State men's and women's tennis teams hosted Coastal Georgia Saturday morning at the VSU Tennis Center. The No. 1-ranked Blazer men's team won 5-0, while the women's team picked up its first win of the season, also 5-0.
The Blazer men's team opened the match with two wins at the top two spots in doubles as No. 6-ranked duo of seniors
Takeshi Taco and
Xaveam Van Wijk won 6-1 over Max Kimayr and Leonardo Cinaci, while junior
Jan Skerbatis and senior
Boruch Skierkier won at No. 2 over Leonardo Marin and Caspar Grylls, 6-2 to earn the team point.
In singles, Skierkier, ranked No. 3 nationally, won 6-0, 6-0 at the top spot over Cinaci, while senior
Edgar Destouet won 6-0, 6-4 over Kimayr. Skerbatis posted a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 3 over Pierre Kassubeck and Van Wijk won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 4 over Tano Gonzalo. Graduate
Arthur Bord was up 6-4. 4-1 at No. 5 and sophomore
Matteo Castellazzi was leading Luis Pereyra 6-1, 3-2 win the match was finished.
The Blazers improved to 3-0 on the year and will renew their storied rivalry with Barry on Mar. 1 at 9 a.m. at the VSU Tennis Complex.
On the women's side, the Blazers opened the match with a 6-0 win from the top doubles tandem of senior
Viktoriia Fedorova and freshman
Alyssa Novoa over Felicia Elixmann and Azul Malatini, while the Mariners only had five players for the match and had to forfeit the No. 3 spot in the doubles lineup with VSU winning the team point. At No. 2 doubles, seniors
Kayla Greco and
Olivia Pezo were up 3-2 win the point was clinched.
Coastal Georgia had five players for the match as it had to forfeit the No. 6 spot for a 2-0 VSU lead. Sophomore
Natalie Rainke won 6-1, 6-1 over Karlie Scott Kersey at No. 1, while Fedorova won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 4 over Kourtny Kosto and sophomore
Valentina Jimenez won 6-1, 6-0 over Lyla Johnson at No. 5 for the 5-0 win. Novoa had a 6-3 win in the first set at No. 2 singles over Malatini and Pezo was up 6-3, 1-0 over Elixmann at No. 3
The women's team improved to 1-2 on the year and it also will face Barry on Mar. 1 at 9 a.m.
