Lady Blazers Head to Volunteer State for Final Regular Season Road Trip

VALDOSTA, Ga. – With a lot on still on the line, the Valdosta State women's basketball team makes its final regular season road trip this week as it travels to Christian Brothers and No. 14 Union.

The Lady Blazers ride a three-game winning streak into the games this week as VSU defeated Trevecca Nazarene 49-40 on Feb. 8, followed by a 69-64 win over Delta State last Thursday and a 71-50 win over Mississippi College last Saturday.  VSU is 15-9 overall this season and 10-8 in Gulf South Conference play as it is fifth in the Gulf South Conference standings currently with four games to play.  Union is 17-1 in league play and 22-3 overall leading Alabama Huntsville by 2.5 games as the Chargers are 15-4 in league play.  Lee is third in conference play at 14-4, followed by West Florida at 12-6.  Auburn Montgomery is sixth at 9-9, followed by Mississippi College (9-10) and Montevallo is 8-10, while Delta State is 8-11. 
 
The top eight teams qualify for the postseason conference tournament, beginning Mar. 4 with games on campus sites.  VSU needs a win and a Delta State loss to clinch a berth in the conference tournament. 
 
VSU had two much-needed victories this past week with the wins over the Mississippi schools.  The Lady Blazers fought off a pesky Delta State squad for a 69-64 win with four Lady Blazer starters in double figures led by junior Aryana Hicks with 16 points and sophomore Erin Whalen added 15 points.  VSU held a 36-27 season at halftime as DSU pulled within 50-46 through three quarters.  The Lady Blazers led by as many as seven three times in the fourth, but made the buckets when they needed and never relinquished the lead.  
 
Last Saturday, VSU avenged a disappointing overtime loss earlier in the season to Mississippi College with a commanding 70-51 victory.  The Lady Blazers used a 16-7 second quarter to pull away for the win as Whalen finished with a team-high 16 points and registered a career-high 15 rebounds for her eighth double-double of the season.  The 15 rebounds were the most by a Lady Blazer in The Complex since 2017.  VSU shot a blistering 54 percent for the game from the field, while going 7 of 9 from distance as it held MC to just 38.8 percent shooting and 1 of 17 from deep.  
 
CBU enters the week looking for its first victory of the season as the Lady Bucs are 0-23 overall and 0-18 in GSC play.  CBU has lost 34-straight games and 30-straight in GSC play dating back to a 68-49 win at Shorter on Jan. 13, 2024.  This season Jada Hood leads the team averaging 15.7 points per game.  She is 109 of 312 from the field (.342) and a team-best 70 of 197 from distance (.355), while going 74 of 95 from the line (.779).  Hood averages a team-high 4.3 rebounds per game and has 74 assists and 36 steals for the season.  
 
In the first meeting this season, VSU roared out to a 29-15 lead in the first quarter and never looked back in a 97-62 win on Jan. 11, 2025.  Senior India Jordan had a career-high 24 points on 8 of 11 from the field and 6 of 8 from distance, while going 2 of 2 from the line leading four players in double figures.  Hicks had a double-double with 15 points and 11 assists.  VSU shot a season-best 63.3 percent on 38 of 60 from the field, while going a season-best 14 of 20 from distance.  Hood finished with 18 points for CBU.  
 
The Lady Blazers have won 16 of the past 22 games in the series dating back to 2010, including eight-straight and ten of 11.  CBU's last win came in Memphis on Jan. 13, 2018, in a 94-89 loss.  
 
Union enters with a 22-3 record overall and a 17-1 mark in GSC play.  The Lady Bulldogs have won eight-straight games and will host West Florida on Thursday, before entertaining VSU on Saturday afternoon for Senior Day.  Olivia Lee leads Union in scoring at 12.7 points per game on 121 of 252 (.480) from the field.  She is 31 of 80 from deep (.380) and 44 of 62 from the line (.710).  Lee averages a team-high 4.2 rebounds per game.  Bethany Dillard is second in scoring at 11.1 points per game and leads the team from distance at 75 of 155 for a .484 clip.  
 
As a team, the Lady Bulldogs are shooting .438 form the field with 758 made field goals in 1732 attempts, while going 294 of 850 from deep (.346) and 323 of 436 from the line (.741).  The team is averaging 85.3 points per game and 35.0 rebounds per game.  Union outscored VSU 25-19 in the fourth quarter for a 72-63 win in Valdosta in the first meeting this season.  Lady Blazer senior Kiersten Nelson had 25 points on 10 of 11 from the field and 5 of 6 from the line, while Hicks added 13 points and Jordan chipped in 11 off the bench.  The game saw five lead changes and two ties.  Union used a late 7-0 run as VSU pulled within 59-54 with 3:36 to play. 
 
Union leads the all-time series 17-7, but VSU has won four of the last seven.  VSU has won two of the last three in Jackson, Tenn., including an 83-68 win there on Dec. 17, 2023, and then a 66-58 win in the South Regional Final on Mar. 14, 2022.   
 
This season, the Lady Blazers are led by Nelson who leads the team averaging 13.8 points per game on 130 of 239 from the field (.544).  She is second on the team in rebounding at 5.7 per contest and second in blocks with 11.  Hicks is second in scoring at 10.9 points per game on 107 of 208 from the field (.514).  She is 39 of 55 from the line (.709) and leads the team with 116 assists and second in steals with 43.  Whalen is third in scoring at 10.7 points per game on 110 of 260 from the field (.423), while she is third in made 3-pointers with 23 and leads the team averaging 8.5 rebounds per game.  Whalen leads the team with 45 steals.  
 
As a team, the Lady Blazers are shooting a .441 clip on 619 of 1404 from the field, while the team is 135 of 428 from deep (.315) and 230 of 364 from the line (.632).  VSU is averaging 66.8 points per game and allowing 61.7 per contest, while pulling down 33.4 rebounds per game and allowing 30.7 per outing.  
 
Following the two games this week, the Lady Blazers return home for Senior Weekend next week hosting Auburn Montgomery on Feb. 27 at 6 p.m. and then closing the regular season at home Mar. 1 versus Montevallo at 2 p.m. for Senior Day.
