Alyssa Novoa all earned Gulf South Conference Player or Freshman of the Week honors, the league office announced Wednesday.
Skierkier helped lead the defending national champion Blazers to a 6-1 victory in the season-opener last Friday versus Montevallo. He won both of his matches, registering a decisive 6-0, 6-0 win in singles over Paul Sobich at the top spot in the lineup. Skierkier and teammate
Jan Skerbatis made quick work in doubles with a 6-1 victory.
Doitteau won victorious in his collegiate debut as the rookie from Paris, France, won 6-4, 6-0 at the No. 5 singles spot over Ryota Nakajima, giving VSU a 3-0 lead in the match en route to the 6-1 win for Freshman of the Week accolades.
On the women's side, Novoa, a native of Apopka, Fla., also made her collegiate debut this past week earning GSC Women's Tennis Freshman of the Week honors. In singles, Novoa conceded the opening set to Claire Jaramba, before winning the final two sets 6-2, 6-4 to secure the point on court two. She began the match at No. 1 doubles with teammate
Viktoriia Fedorova winning 7-5 over Greta Vagnini and Johanna Kullman.
The Blazer men's and women's tennis teams continue at home on Friday, Feb. 21 at 2 p.m. at the VSU Tennis Complex versus Saint Leo.
