Three Second Half Goals Lift Valdosta State Women’s Soccer to Senior Day Victory

VALDOSTA, Ga. – Three second half goals by Valdosta State lifted the Blazer women's soccer team to a 3-1 victory over visiting Mississippi College Sunday afternoon on Senior Day.  Blazer junior Taylor Youmans finished with two goals in the match and had the game winner.

The Blazers had 11 shots and five on target for the match, while MC finished with ten shots and six on goal.  VSU won last season in Clinton, Miss., for the first win in program history against the Choctaws and now won in Valdosta for the first time in five tries (1-3-1).  The three goals also marked the most against MC in a match in the 12 meetings all-time.  VSU won 2-0 last season and scored just two goals in the first ten meetings in program history.

For Senior Day, there was a large contingent of family and friends in attendance and a season-high 236 fans, which is the most for a home match since Sept. 29, 2023, versus Christian Brothers.  Prior to the match Sunday, VSU honored the five seniors on their final regular season match in a Blazer uniform as the 2025 senior class included in alphabetical order; Victoria Bahr, Caroline Kimmel, Katherine Kimmel, Lydia Lewis and Claire Timberlake.  VSU Athletics would like to wish each of these outstanding seniors the best of luck in their future endeavors.

Youmans finished three shots and two on goal with the two scores marking her first multi-goal match in a Blazer uniform and her second game winner of the season.  Sophomore Maria Rojas finished with the assist on the insurance goal in the 79th minute.

Blazer junior Kaitlyn Scherer scored the first goal for the Blazers to level the match at 1-1 with a nice assist from junior Tatyana Machado on a beautiful cross to the center and score in the 57th minute.  Youmans' game winner came in the 62nd minute as she made some nifty dribbles with the ball and then a turnaround shot that hit the cross bar and straight into the goal for a 2-1 lead.

Timberlake finished with five saves for the Blazers between the pipes, while MC goalkeeper Celine Grothe has three saves.

The Choctaws (7-8-3, 5-5-2 GSC) were led by Paula Catalan who had the goal and Jaylen Bodry had the assist for a 1-0 lead at intermission as her goal came in the 37th minute.  Jadyn Mallory finished with a team-high two shots and both on goal, while Summer Utzig had two shots and one on frame.

VSU (5-8-4, 3-7-1) will conclude the regular season on Wednesday at 1 p.m. ET with a makeup match at Union University in Jackson, Tenn., as the match against the Lady Bulldogs was canceled a week ago due to inclement weather.
