Eimy Negron Domenech were named Steel's Jewelry Blazer Athletes of the Week, the athletic department announced Monday.
This is the second weekly honor of the season for Negron Domenech and the first for Reddick, Jr. Negron Domenech has been named Gulf South Conference Defensive Player of the Week for three-straight weeks and gave the selection committee a strong case to win the award this week for the fourth week in a row.
This past weekend, she posted 47 digs in six sets, pacing at 7.83 digs per set in wins over West Alabama and Mississippi College. Her 27 digs on Saturday against the Choctaws were the second most in any three set GSC match this season. Negron Domenech also added nine assists, two kills, and a service ace over the two victories. The Orlando, Fla. Native, leads the team and ranks third in the GSC in digs per set on the season at 4.76 per set.
Reddick, Jr., was named Gulf South Conference Offensive Player of the Week on Monday as he had a season-high 151 yards on the ground on 18 carries and one touchdown with a long rush of 43 yards, while catching three passes for three yards as VSU upset No. 21 Delta State 27-23 Saturday afternoon. He averaged 8.4 yards per carry as the Blazers rushed for 185 yards as DSU entered allowing just 118 yards on the ground for the season for 39th nationally.
He has scored in three-straight games - all wins by the Blazers and his 43-yard touchdown run pulled the Blazers within 23-17 in the third quarter against Delta State. VSU outscored Delta State 17-2 in the second half after trailing 21-10 at halftime. VSU did not take the lead until the final nine seconds of the contest. The West Palm Beach, Fla., native, leads the team with 556 yards on 94 carries for a 6.0 average per game for the season and seven rushing touchdowns. This marks the first Offensive Player of the Week honor for VSU this season.
VSU volleyball closes the regular season in The Volunteer State with matches at Trevecca Nazarene on Friday, Nov. 14 at 7 p.m. ET in Nashville, Tenn., and then battles Lee on Saturday, Nov. 15, at 5 p.m., in Cleveland, Tenn. The Blazers currently sit fifth in the GSC standings with a 12-15 record overall and an 11-7 mark in league play. VSU still has a chance at a first round bye in the GSC Championship and will need to win both matches this weekend to enhance its chances of a bye. If the Blazers don't receive the bye, they would play in a first round matchup on Tuesday, Nov. 18 either in Valdosta or on the road.
The Blazer football team heads to No. 3 West Florida (9-0, 2-0 GSC) for the outright Gulf South Conference title on Saturday at 3 p.m. ET in Pensacola, Fla. With a win, VSU (5-4, 2-0 GSC) would earn the league's automatic berth into the NCAA postseason and win its 12
th GSC title.
