Volleyball Falls in Four Sets in Montgomery

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Valdosta State volleyball team (8-12, 7-4 Gulf South Conference) fell in four sets (16-25, 15-25, 25-23, 22-25) to the Auburn Montgomery Warhawks (3-16, 2-9 GSC) on Tuesday night in Montgomery. The loss breaks up a four-match winning streak.

Senior Sabrina Oncins knocked down the first Blazer kill. VSU gained the other five of its first six points courtesy of Warhawk errors. Several AUM kills and an ace from Kiara Vega pushed the Warhawks in front 11-6. A pair of kills from Sophomore Avery Mullins cut the deficit to 13-8.

Oncins worked with freshman Madison Kilmer to put down a block, then the freshman knocked down a kill to cut the lead to 14-10. Junior Asia Montagnani put down a pair of quick kills, but the AUM continued applying pressure, building its lead to 19-12.

The Blazers benefited from several errors and junior Hailey Holder served an ace. A third kill from Mullins brought VSU within 21-16, but the Warhawks took the next four points to win the set 25-16.

A block from Oncins and senior Ava Young joined a Warhawk error to open the second set with a 2-0 Blazer lead. Young then sent down a kill, but the Warhawks took the next five points. Senior Katie Callenberger broke the run with a kill to cut the deficit to 6-4. The Warhawks went on another four-point run before a kill from Montagnani made it 10-5.

Mullins and sophomore Eva LaRochelle put down back-to-back kills. Young and Oncins knocked down the next two kills for the Blazers. After several errors, VSU was within 13-10. Young and Kilmer out down more Blazer kills.

A pair of Warhawk errors aided the Blazer cause, but AUM led 23-14 late. Graduate Macy Brown put down a kill, but AUM's Kendall McCain ended the set with an ace to win 25-15 and take a 2-0 lead in the match.

McCain started the third set with a Warhawk kill. Montagnani matched it with one of her own, an error made it 2-1 Blazers. The reigning GSC Defensive Player of the Week junior Eimy Negron Domenech put down a kill of her own. Two more from Oncins and an AUM error gave VSU a 6-4 lead.

Callenberger and Mullins teamed up for a block, then Young and Oncins worked together for another. Kills from Montagnani (2) and LaRochelle joined several AUM errors to power the VSU offense, but the Warhawks drew closer, eventually jumping ahead 16-14. Kills from Callenberger and LaRochelle kept the deficit within two. Young and LaRochelle then worked together for a block, 19-18 AUM.

Young followed the block by sending down a kill. An error by the Warhawks gave the Blazers back a 20-19 lead. AUM jumped back in front 21-20 after a kill and block by Courtney Joseph. Montagnani sent down a big kill to set up a service ace from Negron Domenech. A combo block from Mullins and Oncins made it 23-21. A pair of Warhawk errors closed out the set with a 25-23 Blazer victory to keep the match alive.

The sides traded errors early in the fourth and final set. Another kill from Mullins tied the set 2-2 early. The next Blazer point came on a kill from Montagnani, but the Warhawk offense soared ahead 7-3. VSU would quickly storm back to tie the set at seven behind kills from Callenberger (2) and Mullins.
