No. 6 Valdosta State travels to Pensacola for a Clash with West Florida

VALDOSTA, Ga. – The No. 6 Valdosta State Blazers look to get back on track this weekend, as they head to Pensacola, Fla. to take on the West Florida Argonauts on Saturday, Feb. 1 at 5 p.m. ET.  VSU enters this matchup with a record of 16-3 overall and 11-2 in GSC play while UWF is 5-14 overall and 4-9 in GSC play.
 
Valdosta State lost to No. 4 Alabama Huntsville on Monday night in a thrilling overtime game that was capped off by an underhanded shot from UAH to win the game with 0.7 seconds left. The Blazers current rank at No. 6 is their highest ranking since Jan. 12, 2021, when they were ranked No. 5 in the NABC Coaches Poll.

The Blazers are currently sitting in second place in the Gulf South Conference, as they are 2.5 games out of first place while being up 1.5 games on Trevecca Nazarene, who is currently sitting in third with a 10-4 GSC record.
 
Head coach Mike Helfer has done wonders with this team, as the Blazer offense is averaging 93.6 PPG, which is seventh in the country and first in the GSC. Transition has been VSU's bread and butter, as they scoring 25.53 points on the break per game which is second in the nation. A large part of that is due to forced turnovers, as Valdosta State is forcing 19.37 turnovers per game while averaging just over 12 steals a game.
 
Individually, senior Carlos Hart is leading the charge in scoring, as the Miami native is averaging 18.2 PPG on a .488/.275/.768 shooting clip while already leading the team in rebounds (6.3), assists (79), and steals (53). Junior Drew Mills put together yet another strong performance against the Chargers, as the Baltimore native put up 27 points on 5-8 from distance and hauling in a season-high 12 rebounds.
 
Valdosta State previously beat West Florida back on Dec. 15 in a 90-88 victory. Carlos Hart scored a game high 22 points while shooting 8-9 from the line and chipping in four steals. The Blazers are winners of four straight against the Argos and are looking for their second consecutive season sweep.
 
West Florida enters this matchup in the midst of a difficult year, as the Argos are currently sitting in ninth place in the GSC and are the outside looking in of the postseason tournament. On the year, UWF is shooting .435 from the floor and .346 from distance while holding opponents to .450 from the field and .342 from long range. The Argos are scoring 70.7 PPG while averaging nearly 13 turnovers as they turned the ball over a season high 23 times in Valdosta. Individually, UWF is led in scoring by guard Shay Davis, who is averaging 13.2 PPG on a .437/.380/.868 clip. In their most recent matchup, Davis scored 16 points on 4-11 from the field and 2-5 from distance.
 
Following this matchup, the Blazers will continue on the road as they head up to Tennessee to take on Lee and Trevecca Nazarene before hosting Delta State and Mississippi College back at The Complex.
