VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Valdosta State women's basketball team dropped a 68-47 decision to Alabama Huntsville Monday evening at The Complex. With the loss, the Lady Blazers fell to 11-8 overall and 6-7 in Gulf South Conference play, while UAH improved to 16-3 overall and 11-2 in league play.
The game was moved from last Thursday to Monday due to Winter Storm Enzo. Senior
Kiersten Nelson finished with 14 points and five rebounds on 6 of 10 from the field and 2 of 4 from the line, while sophomore
Erin Whalen added 15 points off the bench on 6 of 13 from the field, 2 of 3 from distance and 1 of 1 from the line, while pulling down five rebounds.
On a tough shooting night, the Lady Blazers shot 19 of 51 from the field for a 37.3 clip, while the team was 5 of 15 from distance and 4 of 9 from the line. UAH shot 26 of 54 from the field for 48.1 percent, while the Chargers were 9 of 23 from distance and 7 of 11 from the line. UAH held a 37-23 lead in rebounding. Lili Wilken led the team with 17 points and nine rebounds on 6 of 11 from the field, 2 of 4 from deep and 3 of 3 from the line leading three players in double figures.
Early in the contest, Nelson scored inside for a 9-6 lead with 5:11 to play in the first quarter. From there, UAH closed the quarter on a 9-0 run for a 15-9 lead through ten minutes. The Chargers continued the run into the second quarter building the lead to 30-14 with 4:33 to play in the half using a 24-5 run since the 5:11 mark in the first quarter. Whalen pulled VSU within 33-20 at the break.
Whalen buried a triple with 6:10 to play in the third pulling VSU within 45-27, but UAH's Ivey Maddox answered with a long ball as VSU would get no closer than 19 the rest of the third frame. Junior
Aryana Hicks hit a triple pulling within 55-36 through three quarters. The Lady Blazers trimmed the deficit to 15 on a jumper from Hicks with 4:20 to play in the fourth, but UAH used a 7-1 run to close the game for the 68-47 victory.
VSU returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 1 at 3 p.m. ET at West Florida beginning a three-game road trip. The Lady Blazers then will return home to host Delta State at 6 p.m., on Feb. 13 at The Complex.
