Lady Blazers Blow Past Christian Brothers, 97-62

VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Valdosta State women's basketball team posted a 97-62 victory over visiting Christian Brothers Saturday afternoon at The Complex.  VSU had four players in double figures led by a career-high 24 points from senior India Jordan.
 
The Lady Blazers improved to 10-5 overall and 5-4 in Gulf South Conference play as Jordan went 8 of 11 from the field, including 6 of 8 from distance and 2 of 2 from the line, while junior Aryana Hicks tallied a double-double with 15 points and 11 assists.  Senior Jillian Schenk added 15 points off the bench – all from distance and senior Kiersten Nelson chipped in 14 points. 
 
VSU shot a season-best 38 of 60 from the field for 63.3 percent, while it drained a season-high 14 triples on 20 attempts and was 7 of 10 from the field. The Lady Blazers shot 57 percent or better in each quarter of the game, while they had a season-high 29 assists.  VSU held a 35-19 lead in rebounding
 
CBU finished with 18 points from Jada Hood and ten from Lamonnie Owens as the Lady Blazers held the Lady Bucs to 21 of 54 from the field for 38.9 percent, while they were 6 of 17 from beyond the arc and 14 of 19 from the line.   
 
Hood pulled CBU within 10-9 with a triple from Hood and then took the lead with a jumper from her and a jumper from Owens for a 13-10 lead.  From there, the Lady Blazers took over as sophomore Erin Whalen scored beginning a 19-2 run to close the first quarter for a 29-15 lead through ten minutes.  The 29 points scored marked the most points scored in the opening quarter this season for the Lady Blazers.  VSU opened the game 12 of 19 from the field, while it was 4 of 5 from beyond the arc.
 
VSU stretched the lead to 20 at 43-23 with 1:52 to play in the first half on a layup from freshman Amaya Broadus.  She finished with four points on 2 of 3 from the field and four rebounds in six minutes of action.  Jordan continued her strong play with a triple for a 48-27 lead with 22 seconds left in the half as CBU ended the frame with Owens scoring one of two free throws for a 48-28 margin at intermission.  Jordan had 13 points at the break, while Owens had 10 for CBU.
 
Back-to-back triples from Jordan and one from Schenk pushed the lead to 34 at 68-34 with 2:19 left in the third as during a 14-0 run finishing with the "and one" from senior Kenya Edelhart for a 71-34 score with 1:33 remaining in the third.  CBU trimmed the deficit to third in the fourth, but the Lady Blazers used a 13-2 run for a 97-56 lead with 1:37 to go and then the 97-62 final score.
 
VSU returns to the road next week at Montevallo Thursday, Jan. 16 at 6:30 p.m. ET and then at Auburn Montgomery on Saturday, Jan. 18 at 2 p.m. ET.
