Blazers Travel to No. 15 Embry-Riddle Wednesday, Host Georgia College Saturday

VALDOSTA, Ga. – Fresh off two wins to start the 2024 season, the Valdosta State women's soccer team travels to No. 15 Embry-Riddle for a Wednesday, Sept. 11 matchup beginning at 6 p.m., and then will return home to host Georgia College on Saturday at 5 p.m. at the VSU Soccer Complex.

The Blazers opened the season with a 3-0 win against Middle Georgia last Thursday at the VSU Soccer Complex.  VSU dominated the match from the get go outshooting the Knights 18-2 and 12-1 in shots on goal.  VSU had nine corner kicks in the contest and scored on of its three goals off the set piece.  Senior Molly Muenchen scored the first goal of the season for a 1-0 lead at the break, followed by goals from freshman Maria Rojas and sophomore Sarah Hudson in the second half.  Senior goalkeeper Emma Pruett posted the clean sheet. 
 
On Saturday, the Blazers traveled to Tigerville, S.C., for the first meeting with North Greenville.  VSU outshot the Trailblazers 13-7 and 5-2 in shots on target, while Pruett posted her second shutout in as many matches and senior Ansley Decenzo scored in the 61st minute for the game winner.  
 
For the season, the Blazers have scored four goals by four different players and have 31 shots (.129) and 18 on frame (.581), with four assists by four different players also.  Rojas leads the team with seven shots (.143) and six on target (.857), while Decenzo has four shots – all on goal.  Pruett has played all 180 minutes with three saves in nine shots faced.  
 
Head coach Stephen Andrew won his 200th career match with the 1-0 win at North Greenville (200-101-20), while he won his 60th match at VSU (60-46-11).  He is the winningest coach in VSU history for women's soccer and is in his eighth season at the helm of the program.
 
Embry-Riddle, ranked No. 15 to begin the season, is 1-1 on the year with a 3-2 loss to No. 13 Catawba on the road an won a neutral site matchup with Chowan, 1-0, last weekend in Salisbury, N.C.  The Eagles went 14-2-3 last season losing to Nova Southeastern in the NCAA South Regional.  The Eagles were picked to win the Sunshine State Conference this year with 97 points and seven of 11 first-place nods.  ERAU has won four-straight SSC titles and return 22 letterwinners and eight starters from a season ago. 
 
ERAU held a 2-1 lead over Catawba in the 72nd minute, but Catawba tied the match just over a minute later and then was awarded a penalty kick in the 86th minute for the winner.  All five goals came in the second half.  ERAU held a 16-13 lead in shots, while Catawba led 9-6 in shots on target.  Against Chowan, the Eagles scored the game winner 5:12 into the second half as ERAU held a 15-8 lead in shots and 6-2 in shots on goal. 
 
Just like the Blazers, a different player has scored each of the goals and assists so far.  ERAU's Wilma Bergman leads the team with seven shots (.143) with three on goal (.429).  In goal, Oona Jokinen has played all 180 minutes, allowing three goals (1.50 GAA) with eight saves and one shutout, while facing 21 shots.  
 
ERAU leads the all-time series 2-0-1 as the teams played last season in Valdosta to a 1-1 draw.  ERAU was ranked No. 2 nationally for the match as ERAU's Marie Myhrvold Seim scored just 27 minutes into the contest, but current Blazer junior Victoria Bahr scored in the 60th minute for the equalizer.  ERAU held a 12-5 lead in shots and a 5-2 advantage in shots on goal.  Blazer sophomore goalkeeper Tori Vliet had six saves in the match, while Jokinen had one save.  ERAU head coach Liam McIlhatton is in his third season at the helm of the program and is 29-4-8 in the tenure in Daytona Beach, Fla.
 
Georgia College enters the week with a 1-1 record after a 2-1 win over Chowan and a 3-1 loss to No. 13 Catawba last weekend in Salisbury, N.C.  GC will host Middle Georgia Wednesday before travling to Valdosta for Saturday's matchup.  Three different Bobcats have scored goals this season, while Ali Amrozowicz leads the team with two assists with a team-high nine shots and six on frame.  Her sister Morgan Amrozowicz, along with Amanda Dewey and Aralyn Everett each have scored this season.  
 
In goal, Ella Hayes has started both matches and logged 138:05 minutes, allowing three goals (1.96 GAA) with eight saves while facing 24 shots.  Kassidy Fortin has played 41:55 minutes, allowing one goal (2.15 GAA) with a 1-0 record and has faced four shots.  
 
VSU leads the all-time series with Georgia College 2-1-1.  The teams have played each of the last three seasons with VSU winning the last two, Georgia College won in 2021 and the teams tied in the first meeting, 0-0 in 2016.  Last season, VSU posted a 5-1 victory in Milledgeville as senior Molly Wooldridge scored two goals including the game winner and had one assist.  
 
The Blazers then will host Georgia Southwestern on Sept. 18, before opening Gulf South Conference play on Sept. 21 at Montevallo.
