VALDOSTA, Ga. – The No. 3-ranked Valdosta State men's tennis team posted a convincing 4-0 victory over No. 26 Hawaii Pacific Sunday afternoon at the VSU Tennis Complex. The Blazers improved to 15-3 this season, while HPU fell to 10-3.
In doubles, the Blazers took the early 1-0 lead setting the tone, winning all three matches as junior
Xaveam Van Wijk and senior
Christian Wedel won 6-2 over Robin Sanz and Riku Ogasawara at No. 3, followed No. 36 duo of sophomore
Jan Skerbatis and junior
Boruch Skierkier downing Lennard Richter and Jim Walder, 6-2. At the top spot, senior
Luca Mack and senior
Rodrigo Carvalho, ranked No. 13 nationally, won 6-3 over No. 21 tandem of Jakub Beran and Mile Matic. Carvalho played in his first match since Feb. 18 and was a welcome return to the lineup.
The Blazers then used straight-set wins at Nos. 3-5 for the 4-0 victory with freshman
Jerome Iaconi winning 6-1, 6-4 at No. 3 over Walder, while Wedel won 6-2, 6-4 at No. 4 and Skerbatis bested Bruno Johannes 6-2, 7-6 at No. 5. Mack, ranked No. 27 battled No. 56 Sanz not completing the match, while Skierkier, ranked No. 29, was up 6-3, 4-3 over Beran when the match was clinched.
