PPENSACOLA, Fla. – Following Saturday's disappointing loss to No. 7 West Alabama, the Valdosta State women's tennis team rebounded nicely and pulled off a 4-3 upset victory at No. 14 West Florida Saturday morning. The win snapped a 19-game skid against the Argos dating back to Apr. 18, 2010, with VSU winning 5-1.
The Blazers came out with a renewed vigor as they won at Nos. 1 and 2 doubles to win the doubles point. Freshmen duo of
Viktoriia Fedorova and
Denisa Hanakova won 6-2 over Glullana Sacco and Jenna Svatos, while freshmen tandem of
Natalie Rainke and
Aneta Poborilova also won 6-2 over Carlota Verdu and Luiza Daud at No. 2 to claim the point. UWF tandem of Aline Mdiori Da Silva and Guadalupe Martinez won 6-4 over juniors
Kayla Greco and
Olivia Pezo.
With the early momentum, the match headed to singles as Midori, ranked No. 63
rd nationally, won 6-4, 6=2 at No. 2 singles over Hanakova for a 1-1 score. Pezo gave the Blazers the lead, once again, with a straight-set win at No. 5 as she downed Svatos 6-3, 7-5 for a 2-1 score. Poborilova put VSU up 3-1 with a huge 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 3 over Martinez. Rainke won the first set over Verdu at No. 1, but dropped the next two 6-2, 6-3 as UWF pulled within 3-2. VSU clinched the match as Greco won at No. 4 with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 win over Nathalla Mossambani for a 4-2 score. UWF won at No. 6 as Daud won 1-6, 6-1, 7-6 (7-3) over Fedorova.
With the win, VSU improved to 4-7 overall and 3-1 in GSC play, while UWF fell to 9-6 overall and 5-2 in GSC play. The Blazers will return to Pensacola next weekend with three matches versus Delta State (Friday), Christian Brothers (Saturday) and Mississippi College (Sunday), before returning home to host Auburn Montgomery on Wednesday, Apr. 10 at 3 p.m. at the VSU Tennis Complex.
