PENSACOLA, Fla. – The No. 2-ranked Valdosta State men's tennis team posted a 7-0 victory over West Alabama Friday afternoon. VSU improved to 10-2 overall and 3-0 in Gulf South Conference play, while UWA fell to 4-9 overall and 2-2 in league play.
VSU got things off on the right foot as it won the doubles point for the early lead. No. 40 duo of sophomore
Jan Skerbatis and junior
Boruch Skierkier won 6-1 over Villslav Bonev and Caden Goldammer at No. 3. UWA won at No. 2 doubles as Igbionvia Wilson and Eita Ishikawa won 6-3 over juniors
Takeshi Taco and
Xaveam Van Wijk, but Blazer top duo of seniors
Luca Mack and
Christian Wedel won 7-6 (7-3) to claim the team point.
Skierkier, ranked No. 15 nationally, made quick work of Ishikawa (6-0, 6-2) for a 2-0 Blazer lead, while freshman
Jerome Iaconi won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5 singles for a 3-0 lead. Freshman
Matteo Castellazzi, playing in his first match of the spring, won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 6 to clinch the win. Wedel won 6-4, 6-3 at No. 4 singles over Jacob Tapia, while Taco, ranked No. 5 nationally, posted a 6-3, 6-3 win over Igbinovia for a 6-0 lead and Mack, who is ranked No. 26, needed three sets at the top spot to dispatch No. 52 Lucas Hammond 1-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-1).
