PENSACOLA, Fla. – In the second meeting of the season between the two teams, No. 9 West Florida upset No. 2 Valdosta State 4-3 Saturday morning in Pensacola, Fla.  VSU won the first meeting between the two teams 4-2 in the ITA National Indoors in February in Indianapolis, Ind.

The Argos won the doubles point marking a rare occasion VSU had not won the doubles point this spring.  VSU top tandem of seniors Luca Mack and Christian Wedel downed Albin Ekenros and Joaquin Estevez, 6-1.  From there, UWF's Diego Duran and Sebastian Rondon won 6-1 over junior Xaveam Van Wijk and freshman Jerome Iaconi.  At No. 3, UWF pulled the upset as Sebastian Sotelo and Tomas Leston knocked off No. 40 duo of sophomore Jan Skerbatis and junior Boruch Skierkier, 6-4 to claim the early lead.

In singles, No. 15-ranked Skierkier tied the match at 1-1 with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Ekenros, but the Argos took the lead, once again, as Duran won 6-4, 6-1 over Wedel at No. 4.  Iaconi posted a 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 victory over Denilso Martinez for a 2-2 score.  Leston won 6-4, 6-2 over freshman Matteo Castellazzi at No. 6 for a 3-2 Argo lead, but No. 5-ranked Taco responded with a 7-5, 7-5 victory over No. 27 Sotelo for a 3-3 score.  Rondon, ranked 21st nationally, and Mack, who is No. 26 nationally, split the first two sets, 5-7, 6-4, but Mack was unable come up with the final match heroics falling 6-3 as UWF won the match.

VSU returns to Pensacola, Fla., next week for three matches versus Delta State, Mississippi College and Christian Brothers, before returning home to host Auburn Montgomery on Apr. 10 at 3 p.m. at the VSU Tennis Complex.
