45th Reunion of 1979 National Champion Blazer Baseball Team Set for Saturday at Billy Grant Field at Tommy Thomas Park

VALDOSTA, Ga. – The 1979 version of the Valdosta State University Blazer baseball team will gather on Billy Grant Field at Tommy Thomas Park on Saturday, forty-five years after winning the NCAA Division II Baseball National Championship in Springfield, Ill. 
 
Hall of Fame Head Coach Tommy Thomas, nineteen players, a pair of press box ladies, and radio broadcaster Dr. Dave Waples are expected for the event.  The individuals will be honored in a brief ceremony ahead of Valdosta State's doubleheader against Alabama Huntsville at 12:35 p.m. The first game will begin at 1 p.m. 
 
The crown was the first of the current eight Valdosta State NCAA Division II National Championships, and the only championship won when the school was called Valdosta State College. 
 
The 1979 edition finished 47-14-1 on the season, after going 5-1 in the World Series.

Players Sal Amadeo, Frank Gonzalez, Pat Kelley, Ronnie Lundell, Frank DeGennaro, Tim Harris, Carl Owen, Mike Raines, Terry Reynolds, Bart Shuman, Jimmy Wall, Andy Micacchione, Chuck Rigoni, Tim Carroll, David Raffensberger, Rick Gorey, Kip McLeod, Mark Brown, and Kelly Scott, as well as press box ladies Louise Romaine Vine and Becky Godsey Bonds and superfan Karen Howell Duncan have all indicated they will be at the ceremony.

General admission is $5.00 for Adults, $3.00 for Senior (65+) and Youth (5-21), under 4 and all Active Duty Military members and their families are Free.
