VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Valdosta State women's tennis team will host Division I member University of Connecticut on Monday at 10 a.m. at the VSU Tennis Courts. VSU then will return to Gulf South Conference play at Montevallo on Wednesday, Mar. 13 at 3 p.m. ET.

The Huskies enter the weekend with a 7-5 and played at Mercer on Sunday. UConn lost 7-0 at Boston University on Mar. 6. The Huskies are led by Isabel Petri Bere and Caroline Hinshaw this season as Petri Bere is 7-4 in singles and Hinshaw is 7-5. As a doubles team, the duo is 8-4 record to lead the team this season, playing at both the No. 2 and No. 3 spot.
This will be the first meeting against UConn in program history for the Blazers, while it marks the first matchup with a division I program since a 4-0 loss to Austin Peay in Valdosta on Mar. 7, 2019.
The Blazers enter with a 2-4 record overall and a 1-0 mark in GSC play this season. Saturday's GSC match with Lee was postponed as the team is coming off a 4-3 loss at No. 21 Flagler on Mar. 6. In that match, junior duo of
Olivia Pezo and
Kayla Greco won 6-2 in doubles, while Flagler won the other two doubles courts for the early lead. VSU had a retirement at No. 6 for a 1-1 score, but the Saints won the next three matches to clinch the win. However, the Blazers kept fighting and freshman
Denisa Hanakova won 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-8) at No. 2 and freshman
Aneta Poborilova won 1-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-7) at No. 3 for the 4-3 final.
This season Hanakova leads the team with a 4-1 record in singles, while Greco/Pezo are 3-2 in doubles and Poborilova and junior
Natalie Rainke are 4-2 in doubles.
Montevallo is 3-5 overall and 1-2 in league play thus far. The Falcons have dropped four-straight matches, including a 5-2 setback to No. 17 West Florida on Saturday. UWF won two of the three doubles matches. UM had wins at the top spot in singles as Klara Podskubkova won 6-4, 6-2 over Carlota Verdu and Johanna Kullman won 6-4, 6-4 at No. 6 over Jenna Svatos.
VSU is 3-4 against Montevallo since Mar. 9, 2018, but the Blazers have won the last two matching, including a 6-1 win last season on Mar. 17, 2023, in Valdosta. VSU won in Montgomery, Ala., on Apr. 28, 2022, in the conference tournament, 4-2.
