Blazer Women’s Tennis Heads to No. 22 Georgia College for Wednesday Match

VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Valdosta State women's tennis team returns to action on Wednesday at 2 p.m. at No. 22 Georgia College.  The Blazers are 1-2 on the year and 1-0 in Gulf South Conference play, while Georgia College is 3-3 on the year.

The Blazers have not played since a 4-0 loss at No. 3 Lynn on Feb. 11.  VSU won its opener in a 7-0 victory over Shorter on Feb. 8 and then a 4-1 loss to top-ranked Barry on Feb. 10.  Despite the losses, the Blazers gave it their all and freshman Natalie Rainke downed top-ranked Salma Djoubri in the first set of a 7-5, 1-6, 1-6 loss at Lynn, Rainke and freshman teammate Aneta Poborilova won 6-3 in doubles versus Barry.  Rainke is 1-1 in singles this spring and 2-1 in doubles.  Along with Rainke/Poborilova, freshman duo of Denisa Hanakova and Viktoriia Fedorova also are 2-1 in doubles this season.  The Blazers are 6-7 in singles as a team, while they are 5-3 in doubles this season. 
 
The Bobcats enter with a 3-3 record this season and are coming off a 7-0 win over Clark on Monday.  GC has a 4-1 victory over Tusculum and a 4-3 win over Emmanuel, along with a 4-0 loss to No. 5 Saint Leo, a 4-3 loss to Texas A&M-Kingsville and a 5-2 loss at Newberry.  GC was picked fourth in the Peach Belt Conference this season after going 20-5 last season and finished 14th nationally with a second round appearance in the NCAA postseason.  
 
This spring, Ashley Bentz is 5-1 in singles at the No. 3 spot, while Chiara Santoro is 5-0 at the No. 2 spot in singles to lead the team.  The duo is 4-1 in doubles at the No. 2 position this spring, while Ashton Morrison and Jada Young are 3- at the top spot in the doubles lineup.  
 
The Blazers and the Bobcats are tied 6-6 since Feb. 8, 2009.  GS has won the last two meetings and four of five.  VSU won 4-1 on Feb. 7, 2020, in Valdosta, while GC won last season 5-2 in Valdosta ironically also on Feb. 7.
