Blazers Make a Quick Trip to the Sunshine State to Face West Florida

VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Valdosta State men's basketball team will be hitting the road to the Sunshine State as the Blazers look to complete the season sweep of the West Florida Argonauts on Saturday, Feb. 17 at 5 p.m. ET.

The Blazers are coming off an 86-79 win over the Union Bulldogs on Saturday, Feb. 10. Graduate student LaTrell Tate and senior Mike Isler each scored 25 points apiece, making it their season highs for the duo. Tate kept the Blazer offense under control, playing 39 of the 40 minutes and not committing a single turnover for the night. For Isler, he attacked the paint every chance he got, scoring 18 of his 25 points in the paint. Isler's 25 points was the most points by a bench player all season for VSU.
 
Valdosta State and West Florida faced off earlier this season in Titletown, where the Blazers came out on top, 82-73. VSU trailed by 15 points with 11:18 left in the game, but a strong second half propelled the Blazers to victory, as VSU outscored UWF 43-29 in the second frame. Junior Caden Boser led the way for Valdosta State, scoring 19 points on a perfect 7-7 from the floor and 3-3 from downtown. On the defensive end, graduate student Jay Rucker recorded five steals, nine rebounds, and swatted one shot for the Blazers.
 
Entering this matchup, Valdosta State carries a 9-14 overall record with a 6-13 record in GSC play. For West Florida, they welcome the Blazers with a 7-16 record overall and a 5-14 GSC record. The Argonauts most recently defeated Auburn Montgomery on Tuesday night in Pensacola, Fla. beating the Warhawks of Auburn Montgomery by a score of 93-89. The bench was a key factor for West Florida, as they combined for 53 points and were led in scoring by junior guard Ankit Choudhary, who scored 22 points in just 16 minutes of action.
 
As a team, West Florida averages 72.2 points per contest, good for 10th in the GSC. Junior forward Xavier Washington leads the Argonauts in scoring, averaging 13.1 points a game on .465 from the floor and .286 from beyond the arc. Earlier this season in Valdosta, the Blazers held him check, holding the Palmetto, Fla. native to eight points on 3-8 from the floor.
 
After this weekend matchup in Pensacola, Fla. the Blazers will continue their road trip, heading to Alabama to take on Montevallo on Thursday, Feb. 22 at 8:30 p.m. ET and then to Montgomery, Ala. to face Auburn Montgomery on Saturday, Feb. 24 at 5 p.m. ET.
