VALDOSTA, Ga. – Behind five players in double figures and a 19-2 run midway through the first quarter into the second, the Valdosta State women's basketball team posted an 89-47 victory over visiting Brewton-Parker College Tuesday evening at The Complex.
VSU improved to 2-1 on the year as it shot a season-best 51.5 percent from the field on 35 of 68, while going a season-best 11 of 29 from beyond the arc for 37.9 percent and 8 of 9 from the line. VSU held a 32-24 lead in rebounding and forced BPC into 24 turnovers leading to a 35-5 advantage in points off miscues.
Junior
Jillian Schenk finished with 15 points off the bench and five rebounds – all on 3-pointers going 5 of 9 from the field and 5 of 7 from distance, while senior
Kiersten Nelson had 12 points on 5 of 6 from the field and 2 of 2 from the line. Senior
India Jordan added 11 points off the bench with three triples and junior
Mary McMorris earned her first start as a Lady Blazer with 11 points. Sophomore
Erin Whalen went 5 of 10 from the field and a team-high nine rebounds.
Brewton-Parker, who was playing this game as an exhibition as it is a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) shot 34.7 percent from the field on 17 of 49, while the Lady Barons were 4 of 14 from distance and 9 of 19 from the line. Andranique Stewart had a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds, while Valdosta native Chasity Degale finished with 14 points.
Whalen broke an 8-8 tie as the Lady Blazers took command of the game midway through the first quarter using a 9-0 run for a 17-8 lead capped with a triple from Schenk. She then buried her second trifecta and the Lady Blazers extended the run to 14-2 to end the quarter with a driving layup at the buzzer from Hicks for a 22-10 lead.

Victoria Ikenasio early in the second stretch the run to 16-2 and a 24-10 lead with 9:32 left in the half. Senior
India Jordan dialed long distance for a 27-10 lead and a 19-2 run with 7:47 left in the second quarter. BPC's Kaziah Terrell drained a triple for a 27-13 score, but Nelson found easy sledding inside and Jordan hit her second from long range for a 32-13 lead with 6:42 left in the half. VSU shot its best half of the young season, going 20 of 36 from the field for 55.6 percent, while it knocked down six triples in 15 attempts for a 40 percent clip and went 5 of 6 from the line. Entering the game, the Lady Blazers had made just six 3-pointers in the first two games combined. VSU held a 16-11 lead in rebounding and forced the Lady Barons into 13 turnovers in the opening two frames as VSU had just five miscues. VSU held a 20-0 lead in points off turnovers. VSU held BPC to 9 of 27 from the field, while the Lady Barons were 3 of 9 from distance and 2 of 6 from the line.
Individually, Nelson had a team-high ten points on 5 of 5 from the field, while Schenk had nine points – all on 3-pointers going 3 of 4 from distance and 3 of 5 from the field. Stewart had a team-high seven points on 3 of 5 from the field, while she pulled down six rebounds for the Lady Barons.
The Lady Blazers used a dominating third quarter outscoring BPC 25-6 for the frame and held a 76-29 lead through three frames and then led by a game-high 50 points at 81-31 early in the fourth quarter as all 13 players on the team played with 12 scoring in the contest and 12 also saw double-digit minutes for the game.
VSU returns to action Monday, Nov. 18 at 6 p.m. at The Complex versus Lynn University to conclude the opening homestand.
