Blazer Men’s Golf Team Looks to Continue Strong Start at Hurricane Fall Invitational

VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Valdosta State men's golf team returns to the links this week as it travels the short distance to Albany, Ga., for the Hurricane Fall Invitational at Doublegate Country Club hosted by Georgia Southwestern University.  The 15-team field will play 36-holes on Monday, Oct. 7, followed by 18-holes on Tuesday, Oct. 8, for the 54-hole tournament.

VSU finished third in each of its first two tournaments this fall, including this past tournament at the Statesmen Classic, Sept. 23-24, in West Point, Miss.  There, the Blazers carded a season-low 870 score for the 54-hole tournament.  VSU was the highest finishing team of six Gulf South Conference schools finishing 6-over, while Delta State was fourth at 8-over.  Blazer junior Elad Sebbag finished tied for third at 4-under 212 on rounds of 68, 73 and 71 to pace the team. 
 
The Hurricane Fall Invitational features a strong field again this year with No. 2 North Georgia leading the way in the latest Bushnell/Golfweek D2 Coaches Poll.  Along with the Nighthawks, the field includes; No. 3 West Florida, No. 5 Georgia Southwestern, No. 6 Lincoln Memorial, No. 10 Lee, No. 12 South Carolina-Aiken, No. 19 Columbus State, No. 21 Wingate and No. 24 Barton among teams ranked in the top 25.  
 
Carson-Newman, Valdosta State, Shorter, Anderson all are among others receiving votes, while South Carolina Beaufort and Georgia College complete the field. 
 
The Blazers will send Sebbag, senior Parker Highsmith, senior Brandon Cho, Sophomore Alexander Nilehn, junior Joshua Burki and senior Chase Long to the tournament.  One will play as an individual, while the other five will count towards the team score.  
 
Last season, the Blazers finished 12th at the Hurricane Invitational with a 54-hole score of 904 (296-309-299).  Cho, Highsmith, Long and Nilehn all played in the tournament last season for the Blazers.  The host Hurricanes won with an 867 score and GSW's Marco Trstenjak took home medalist honors with a 2-under 214.
