VALDOSTA, Ga. – Valdosta State senior quarterback
Sammy Edwards set the Gulf South Conference record for consecutive pass attempts without an interception this past week in the 35-10 Homecoming victory over Mississippi College.
Edwards, a native of Saint Augustine, Fla., is 129 of 190 passing this season (67.89%) for 1,883 yards and 18 touchdowns with no interceptions. Edwards entered this past Saturday's game 109 of 160 passing for the season. He surpassed former Blazer Chris Hatcher's school and conference record of 177 passing attempts without an interception set in 1997. Among the top of the GSC record book, as well, is Rogan Wells who had 136 passes without an interception in 2019 and 131 in 2018.
For his career, Edwards is 462 of 692 passing for 6,227 yards, 52 touchdowns and 11 interceptions as he is 19-2 as a starter over the last two seasons and has played in 32 games for his career with 21 starts. Edwards' 6,227 passing yards are good for seventh in program history, while he is eighth in completions (462) and seventh in passing touchdowns (52). Edwards is sixth in program history in total offense at 6,659 yards.
The Blazers, who are ranked No. 2 nationally, are 7-0 overall and 3-0 in Gulf South Conference play, are one of three teams in the country who have not thrown an interception this season along with Southern Connecticut State and Harding. VSU is 142 of 210 passing (67.62%) for 2,020 yards and 19 touchdowns this season. SCSU is 139 of 214 passing this season, while Harding is 25 of 45 passing. The NCAA Division II record is 280 pass attempts by Jesse Showerda of New Haven from Sept. 7, 1996, to Nov. 16, 1996.
VSU has its bye week and will return to action on Nov. 2 at 3 p.m. versus Chowan University at Bazemore-Hyder Stadium.
