TOUGALOO, Miss. – Behind a career-high 19 points from senior
Aleisha Curry and solid team defense, the No. 11/15 Valdosta State women's basketball team more than doubled-up Mississippi College on Saturday afternoon for a 77-38 victory. With the win, VSU won its 15
th-straight game for the fourth longest winning streak in program history.
The venue changed for the game on Saturday from the campus of Mississippi College in Clinton, Miss., to Tougaloo College in Tougaloo, Miss. The Lady Blazers showed no ill effects of the venue change, as Curry went 8 of 8 from the field and 3 of 3 from the line, while registering six rebounds and one assist in 15 minutes of action. Junior
India Jordan scored ten points on 4 of 6 from the field and 2 of 2 from distance in 17 minutes of play.
The Lady Blazers held MC to just 14 of 47 from the field for 29.8 percent, while the Choctaws were 5 of 13 from distance and 5 of 10 from the line. VSU held a 43-23 lead in rebounding as the Lady Blazer bench scored 56 points in the contest. The 38 points allowed marked the fewest surrendered this season by VSU, and the sixth time holding a team to under 40 points under head coach
Deandra Schirmer.
VSU improved to 18-2 overall and 15-1 in Gulf South Conference play, while MC fell to 6-11 overall and 5-9 in league play. As a team, VSU shot 48.2 percent from the field and 15 of 29 in the second half. For the game, the Lady Blazers were 8 of 20 from distance and 15 of 18 from the line. Schirmer improved to 102-30 all-time at VSU, as the Lady Blazers now have won the last five in the series and lead 25-12 all-time in series history versus the Choctaws.
Over the final 2:59 of the first quarter, the Lady Blazers outscored MC 8-3 for an 18-10 lead through the first frame. The second quarter saw VSU shot 6 of 11 from the field and 7 of 10 from the line to take further command of the game as Jordan scored on a layup in the closing seconds of the first half for a 37-20 lead at the break.
VSU came out of the gates with a triple from senior
Emma Martin in the first minute of the second half setting the tone for a 40-20 lead. VSU opened the second half scoring 15 of the first 19 points capped with an "and one" from junior
Jacey Justice and a 52-24 score with 4:13 remaining in the period. Jordan drained a triple for a 62-27 late in the quarter as VSU held a 62-30 lead through three frames. The Lady Blazers held MC to ten points in each of the first three quarters.
The Choctaws scored the first five points of the fourth quarter, but VSU finished the frame on a 15-3 run for the 77-38 lead as the Lady Blazers went 7 of 11 from the field and 1 of 3 from distance in the final frame.
MC did not have one player in double figures in the game as Nia Coleman paced the team with nine points on 3 of 7 from the field, 2 of 2 from deep and 1 of 2 from the line.
The Lady Blazers return home for three games, beginning Feb. 3 at 2 p.m., versus rival West Georgia at The Complex. VSU then will host Christian Brothers on Feb. 8 at 6 p.m., followed by hosting Union on Feb. 10 at 2 p.m.
