Blazers Head to Mississippi for Weekend Trip

VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Valdosta State Blazers travel to Mississippi to take on Delta State on Thursday, Jan. 25 at 8:30 p.m. ET in Cleveland before traveling to Clinton, Miss. To face the Mississippi College Choctaws on Saturday, Jan. 27 at 5 p.m. ET.

The Blazers are entering this weekend trip holding a record of 7-11 overall and 4-10 in conference play. Valdosta State is coming off a split homestand, defeating the Shorter Hawks on Jan. 18 before falling to the Lee Flames on Jan. 20.
 
Head coach Mike Helfer is in his 19th season at the helm of the Blazers, where he holds a 356-186 record in his time in Titletown. Helfer's offense is putting up 75.8 points per contest on .442 from the floor, .649 from the stripe, and .329 from downtown. They are holding opponents to 79.2 points a night on .466 from the floor, .710 from the free throw line, and .339 from beyond the arc. Valdosta State has been aggressive on the glass, averaging 36.2 rebounds a night, and hold a 1.3 margin over opponents so far this season. They are ranked fifth in the GSC in rebounds per contest. Senior Lee Flenor has been a big part of that, leading the GSC in rebounds per game at 7.9. The Miami, Fla. native is averaging 9.8 points and leads the team in steals at 1.5 and field goal percentage at a .530 clip.
 
Three Blazers averaging double figure this season, with junior Caden Boser leading the way at 13.8 points per game. Boser missed Thursday's game due to injury but returned on Saturday, coming off the bench and scored three points in 23 minutes of action. The second year UMKC transfer is knocking down 1.8 triples a night, which ranks 20th in the GSC. Graduate student LaTrell Tate had an exceptional homestand, averaging 21.5 points on 14/25 from the floor, 6/10 from three, and 9/13 from the charity stripe. The Marietta, Ga. native scored a season high 24 points versus Lee on Saturday afternoon, pushing the pace and playing aggressive. He was able to get to the free throw line 11 times and knocked nine of them down. He is now averaging 11.8 points on .382 from the floor, .718 from the line, and .362 from three. Junior Braxton Williams is the third Blazer averaging 10+ PPG, as the recent transfer is putting up 11.6 points per contest on a team leading .820 clip from the line.
 
Valdosta State will look to split the season series with Delta State after falling at The Complex earlier this season, 77-74. For the game, Braxton Williams led the Blazers in scoring with 20 points on 8/12 from the floor. For the Statesmen, they were led by Chris Terrell, who scored 30 points on 10/17 from the floor and 8/10 from three-point range. DSU is entering this matchup with VSU carrying a 10-7 overall record and are 8-5 in conference play. Delta State is currently on a two-game win streak, defeating Christian Brothers on the road on Jan. 20 before defeating Union in a triple overtime thriller on Jan. 22. The Statesmen will return to Cleveland, Miss. with a 7-1 home record, including a 5-5 record versus the Blazers all-time. Individually, DSU is led in scoring by Keithean Brooks, who is averaging 16.8 points per game on .444 from the field, .356 from three, and .817 from the stripe. The junior had 19 points on 7-19 shooting against the Blazers earlier this season.
 
After facing Delta State, Valdosta State will travel to Clinton, Miss. as they look to complete the season sweep over the Choctaws. VSU defeated MC back on Dec. 3, by a score of 77-69. Braxton Williams scored a season high 30 points on 11/15 from the floor, earning him GSC Player of the Week. As a team, the Valdosta State offense committed three total turnovers and shot .510 from the field and .462 from three. As for Mississippi College, they are entering this Saturday afternoon matchup with an 8-8 overall record and 7-5 GSC record. They led by one of the top scorers in the nation by Rashad Bolden. The sophomore guard is putting up ridiculous numbers, averaging 24.4 points a night, which is ranked first in the GSC and second in the country. He is also a good distributor, averaging 4.8 assists and 4.3 rebounds per game. VSU held Bolden in check last game, as he scored 13 points on 3-15 from the field. Overall, the Blazers lead the all-time series 10-5, including a 4-2 record in Clinton, Miss.
 
Valdosta State will have a week off before returning to Titletown to host West Georgia one last time in the Red Clay Rivalry on Saturday, Feb. 3 at 4 p.m.
