Blazers Enter AFCA Top 25 for First Time in 2023 at No. 22

VALDOSTA, Ga. – Following its 28-3 victory over North Greenville on Saturday evening, the Valdosta State football team returned to the American Football Coaches Top 25 checking in at No. 22 this week as the Blazers are 4-0 overall and 1-0 in Gulf South Conference play.  
 
VSU had been the first team out of the rankings last week and further down the among others receiving votes the week before.  Ferris State remains the top team in the country according to the AFCA Top 25, followed by Colorado School of Mines, Pittsburg State (Kan.), Minnesota State and Ouachita Baptist (Ark.) round out the top five.  West Florida moved up one spot following its 49-21 dismantling of West Georgia on Saturday to sixth, followed by Grand Valley State (Mich.), Delta State, Bemidji State (Minn.) and Harding (Ark.) rounded out the top ten of this week's poll.
 
The Blazers are the third team from the GSC in the poll, while from Super Region Two, Benedict (S.C.) is 13th, followed by Lenoir-Rhyne (N.C.) at 15th and VSU at 22nd.  Virginia Union, Tuskegee, Virginia State, Mars Hill and Bowie State are all among others receiving votes.  VSU last was ranked in the AFCA Top 25 on Sept. 26, 2022, at 13th.  This marks the 284th week VSU has been ranked in the AFCA in program history.  
 
VSU is still not ranked in the D2football.com Top 25 this week.  Ferris State leads that poll, while Delta State is sixth and West Florida is eighth among GSC teams.  Benedict is 13th, Lenoir-Rhyne is 14th and Virginia Union is 24th.
